                       Getting Started Quickly.

This section shows you how to get started quickly.

Make sure that your current directory has the following
    files: TAPEMAXS.EXE, TAPEMAXS.HLP, and TAPEMAXS.CFG.

You can do that by typing "DIR /P" at the Dos prompt.

To start Tapemaxs type at the DOS prompt:

TAPEMAXS (then press the enter key)

The program's introduction screen will appear. Wait three
seconds or press the enter key. Tapemaxs will finish loading
the information it needs. (Takes from 1 to 8 seconds.
Longest time is loading from floppy diskette.)

    BASIC INFORMATION:

                           Using your menus.

To access the menus press the alt-key. The menu bar at the
top of the screen will be highlighted. Press a letter key
that corresponds to a highlighted letter on the menu bar
across the top of the screen.

                          Entering a number.

Enter a number by pressing the desired number keys. Then
press the enter key. To clear a number from the display
press the space bar. To delete, insert, or edit a number
in the current tape press the up arrow key, highlight the
number you want delete, edit or insert and select the menu
    option of edit.

    Ways to Use Tapemaxs:

    This section includes:
         The benefits of Tapemaxs.
         Example uses of Tapemaxs.
Quick Numbers, a way to enter numbers with one key.

    THE BENEFITS OF TAPEMAXS:

Tapemaxs was designed by an accountant to meet the
everyday need of balancing tape totals. The key benefits of
    the programs design are:

    1. Will check tape balances more accurately than any adding
        machine.

    2. Will find errors in totals quickly.

                                    Page: 5

              TapeMaxs Copyright (c) 1991 Dale Dillon, Soft-Dil

    3. Will print to any size paper on any printer.

    4. The special feature called quick numbers reduces
        keystrokes of common repetitive numbers.

Take the following examples of two tapes.

Tape 1 Tape 2 The real numbers:
         33.00 33.00 33.00
         45.00 48.00 45.00
          5.00 2.00 2.00
         20.00 20.00 20.00
        -------- ------- -------
        103.00 103.00 100.00
        ========    =======         =======

Both tapes are in error. The second number in tape 2 is 48,
it should be 45. The third number in tape 1 is 5, it should
be 2. These errors offset each other, so the tape total
looks correct. (Ever spend a few days trying to find a
similar error? Our accountant has.) Tapemaxs stops this
error. Use the ON-LINE checking feature in Tapemaxs to stop
    these errors.

is designed to cut time used to process adding
              machine tapes and confirming balances.

                      TAPEMAXS VERSUS YOUR ADDING MACHINE

What does TAPEMAXS do for you?

It finds your errors quickly and painlessly.

              1. It replaces your adding machine and checks your
tapes for errors. With adding machines you get
a bunch of numbers and add them up. Then you
take that same group of numbers and add them up
again. If the two tape totals match you MIGHT
have a good total. Tapemaxs checks your
numbers for you automatically. And its more
accurate than a regular adding machine.

              2. It decreases the time you or your employees
spend balancing tapes. It finds the errors for
you. (You won't have to scan that adding
                  machine tape line-by-line anymore.)

              3. It allows you to print tapes on regular
computer paper. (No more long strings of
                  useless adding machine tape.)

              4. With Tapemaxs you can print your tapes with
headers and footers. Include the subtotal and
total right up on top. (You won't have find
the month or purpose of the tape scrawled
                  sideways on the tape.)

              5. It finds the errors for you automatically.
(Tapemaxs is more accurate than adding
machines. Tapemaxs matches numbers to numbers,
with adding machines you match only totals to
                  totals.)

              6. You can save your work, and come back to it
latter. (Try that on a regular adding
                  machine.)

                              Using Quick Numbers.

              This section covers:
                   What Quick Numbers are.
                   Entering Quick Numbers and Letters.
How to Display Quick Numbers On Screen.
                      (Good for easy reference.)
Turning Quick Numbers On or Off.

              WHAT QUICK NUMBERS ARE:

This feature allows you to enter repetitive numbers
with one simple keystroke. Using this feature will
cut keystrokes and minimize errors. Good examples
include: Premiums at insurance companies, Video
tape rentals, Any item with a set price that you
sell a lot of, set monthly payments..., and more.

              ENTERING QUICK NUMBERS AND LETTERS:

To enter a quick number select "Quick Numbers" from
the options menu. Enter the letter that you want
to use. Press the tab key or select the number
column directly to the right of the letter with
your mouse, and enter your number. You can enter
up to ten numbers. You can save these numbers when
you exit Tapemaxs. (See Saving Changes.)

              DISPLAYING QUICK NUMBERS:

To display Quick Numbers on screen select "Display
Quick Numbers" from the options menu. A listing of
all your letters and numbers will appear directly
below the tape display. If you want to remove the
display from the screen, select the "Display Quick
Numbers" from the options menu again.

TURNING QUICK NUMBERS ON OR OFF:

You can turn Quick Numbers ON or OFF. You must
turn Quick Numbers on before entering any numbers
with one keystroke. You can turn Quick Numbers ON
by selecting "Use Quick Numbers" from the options
menu. If Quick Numbers are ON a small mark ">>"
will appear next to the option on them menu. To
turn OFF Quick Numbers select the same menu option
"Use Quick Numbers." The mark next to the menu
              selection will disappear.

                                 Loading Tapes:

              This section covers:
Read this if you have trouble loading a tape.
How to enter your file specification.
                   Loading Ascii files.

READ THIS IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE LOADING A TAPE:

If you have trouble selecting your files from the
window box file list. You can move through the
list of files by using your arrow keys. To use
your arrow keys press the tab button twice. The up
or down arrows will then move the cursor freely.
Highlight the file you want with the cursor, and
press the enter key or the "OK" button. The file
you selected will begin to load.

HOW TO ENTER YOUR FILE SPECIFICATION:

You can load tapes from a file by selecting the
"Load" option on the "Tape" menu and entering the
file specification. The default file specification
is the current directory of all files ending in the
"TPE" extension. You can use DOS wild cards in the
              file specification.

              Example: C:\TAPEMAXS\*.TPE

              The current drive is: C:
              The current directory: \TAPEMAXS\
              The file name is: *.TPE

(Note that the "*" is a DOS wild card and will
match any file with the TPE extension.)

Tapemaxs will scan the directory for all files with
the extension "TPE." These files appear in a box
on screen. If you have a mouse, you can move
through these files by using the scroll bar. (The
scroll bar is on the right side of the box.) If you
aren't using the mouse, you can move through the
list of files by using your arrow keys. To use
your arrow keys press the tab button twice and use
the up or down arrows to move the cursor.
Highlight the file you want with the cursor, and
press the enter key or the "OK" button. The file
you selected will begin to load.

              LOADING ASCII FILES:

You can load ASCII files into Tapemaxs. Files not

in the Tapemaxs format can be loaded as ASCII
              files.

You can use Tapemaxs to check figures from another
program, if you save the numbers to an Ascii file.
Most programs, including spreadsheets, can do this.
See your software's documentation for more details
on saving or printing files to the ASCII format.
Using Tapemaxs to check figures from a spreadsheet
can speed the process of error corrections.

                                 Saving Tapes:

              This section covers:
How to save the tape your working on.
Saving tapes to the ASCII format.
(Other programs can read this format.)

HOW TO SAVE THE TAPE YOUR WORKING ON:

Save the tape you are working on to a file by
selecting the "Save" option on the "Tape" menu.

Enter the path and file name in the edit box
provided. You can enter a file name up to eight
characters and a file extension of three
characters. If you do not provide a file extension
the extension "TPE" will automatically be added.

The tape your working on is the current tape. The
current tape is clearly displayed on the upper
right side of the screen. To change the current
tape select the "Switch" option on the "Tape" menu,
              or press the "F6" key.

SAVING TAPES TO THE ASCII FORMAT:

You can save tapes as ASCII files. This common
format is read by most programs. For more
information see the help section labeled "ASCII
Files." If you want another program to use the
tape, you will need to save it as an ASCII file.

                         Saving Tapes in ASCII format:

              This section covers:
Other programs can use Tapemaxs files.
Saving your current tape in ASCII format.
Use Tapemaxs to check figures from other
                   programs.

OTHER PROGRAMS CAN USE TAPEMAXS FILES:

Most other programs can use ASCII files. This
common file format can be loaded into most
              spreadsheets, word processors, and accounting
programs. Check the documentation provided with
your program for specific instructions on how to
              load "ASCII" files.

SAVING YOUR CURRENT TAPE IN ASCII FORMAT:

Save your current tape in ASCII format by selecting
the "Save ASCII" option on the "Tape" menu.

USE TAPEMAXS TO CHECK FIGURES FROM OTHER PROGRAMS:

Spreadsheets are common programs that allow you to
use ASCII files. Use Tapemaxs to check your
numbers and totals before you put them in a
spreadsheet. This method lets you take advantage
of Tapemaxs number checking ability. Using
Tapemaxs this way will end some costly time
              consuming errors.

                                Erasing Tapes:

              This section covers:
                   How to erase a tape.

              HOW TO ERASE A TAPE:

You can erase the active tape by selecting the
"Erase Tape" option from the "Tape" menu. Use
extreme care when you erase a tape. You cannot
restore an erased tape. It is usually a good ideal
to save your tape before erasing it.

                                Switching Tapes:

              This section covers:
                   The two Tapemaxs tapes.
                   How to switch tapes.

              THE TWO TAPEMAXS TAPES:

Tapemaxs provides two tapes for you to work with.
Once one tape is entered the other tape is started
by selecting this option. You can find the current
tape by looking at the upper right hand side of the
screen. You need to switch tapes when ready to
Compare, or when you do On-Line checking.

Tapemaxs uses the two tapes to compare and check
numbers that you have entered. Tapemaxs will
replace your adding machine and provide an
efficient means of comparing numbers and balances.
You can change tapes except when this option is
              disabled.

              HOW TO SWITCH TAPES:

To start a new tape you will need to select the
"Switch Tape" option from the "Tape" menu. The
              Shortcut Key is F6.

                                 Sorting Tapes:

              This section covers:
How to select the sort option.
What order you can sort your tapes in.
                   Examples of sorted numbers.
Why you might sort your tape.

HOW TO SELECT THE SORT OPTION:

You can sort the current active tape by selecting
the "Sort" option on the "Tape" menu. Please use
caution when sorting your tapes. You cannot
restore a sorted tape to original order.

WHAT ORDER YOU CAN SORT YOUR TAPES IN:

You can sort the tape in ascending or descending
order. Descending order will sort the tape from
the highest to the lowest number. Ascending order
will sort the tape from the lowest to the highest
              number.

              EXAMPLES OF SORTED NUMBERS:

              Examples:

              Original Order: Descending: Ascending:
                   7 7 1
                   3 5 3
                   5 3 5
                   1 1 7

WHY YOU MIGHT SORT YOUR TAPE:

Sorting a tape is usually done before printing the
tape. Horizontal printing looks nicer when sorted

Sorted tapes can be helpful in finding some errors.

                                   DOS Shell

              What this section covers:
                   Leaving Tapemaxs and entering DOS.
                   Requirements.
What to do if you get the Out Of Memory Error.

              LEAVING TAPEMAXS AND ENTERING DOS:

You can leave Tapemaxs and enter DOS by selecting
the "DOS Shell" option from the "Tape" menu. All
the numbers and information in Tapemaxs remains in
memory. You renter Tapemaxs by typing, "EXIT" at
              the DOS prompt.

              REQUIREMENTS:

This option requires that the DOS file:
"COMMAND.COM" be located somewhere in the path
statement, or located in the current directory.
Most hard disk owners can use this option without
problems. Floppy disk users may need to copy their
"COMMAND.COM" file to the current drive, before
they can use this option. Using this option places
              you at the DOS Prompt.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET THE OUT OF MEMORY ERROR:

Tapemaxs uses most available RAM memory. You can
reduce memory requirements by starting Tapemaxs
              with a command line switch "/M####". Where # =
              Tape Size in numbers.

If you wanted to limited the tape size to 1,000
entries you would type in the following command
              line prompt when starting Tapemaxs.

              Example: TAPEMAXS /M1000

              For 500 entries:

              TAPEMAXS /M500

You can check the tape size after starting Tapemaxs
by reviewing the "Status" selection on the
              "Options" menu.

                               Exiting Tapemaxs:

              What this section covers:
                   How to exit Tapemaxs.
What happens when you exit Tapemaxs.

              HOW TO EXIT TAPEMAXS:

Select the "Exit" option from the "Tape" menu. Or
exit by using the Shortcut Key "Ctrl-X." (See
Shortcut keys for more information on quickly
              selecting menu items.)

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EXIT TAPEMAXS:

When you exit, Tapemaxs checks to see if the tapes
or configuration information has changed. If a
change occurred Tapemaxs asks you to save changes
for either tape, or configuration files.

Examples of common changes include the following:

              1. Added or changed Quick Numbers.
              2. Changed any print option.
              3. Changed color schemes.
              4. Changed tape checking options.
              5. Changed Automatic Plus or Minus.
              6. Changed Number formats.
              7. Changed print routines.
              8. Added a number to a tape.

              Escape Exits without changing number.

                  Deleting, Undeleting, and Inserting Numbers.

              This section covers:
                   How to delete a number.
How to undelete (unerase) a number.
                   How to insert a number.

              HOW TO DELETE A NUMBER:

You can delete a number from the active tape by
selecting the "Delete" option on the "Edit" menu.
Or use the Shortcut keys: "Ctrl-D."

To delete a number move the cursor to the number
you want deleted. Select the delete option from
the menu or use the Shortcut key. Some windows
              provide a delete window button.

HOW TO UNDELETE (UNERASE) A NUMBER:

Undelete works for the last five numbers deleted in
each tape. Undelete will work only for the current
tape. The Current Tape Number is displayed on the
upper right portion of your screen.

To use select the "Undelete" option on the "Edit"
menu. The Undelete option will restore up to the
last five deleted entries. Each number is restored
only at the location it was originally deleted
              from.

              HOW TO INSERT A NUMBER:

If you want to insert a number select the "Insert"
option from the edit menu, or use the Shortcut key
              "Ctrl-I."

When you select the insert option a window will
appear. Enter your number in the window. Do not
include any commas or letters in the number you
enter. Press the enter key when done. You can
cancel this option by pressing the escape key or by
selecting the equals sign (mouse users only) in the
upper right hand corner of the window.

The number is inserted directly below the current
number. Insert will not work if numbers are not in
the tape, or if you are entering a number into the
              tape display.

                              Viewing Both Tapes.

              This section contains:

              This section contains:
                   When to use compare.
                   How to compare two tapes.

                   Exiting compare.

              WHEN TO USE COMPARE:

Use compare when you want the numbers in two tapes
to match exactly. Compare will look at each number
in each tape. Numbers that do not match exactly
              are found.

              HOW TO COMPARE TWO TAPES:

Enter your numbers in both tapes. Select the
COMPARE option on the CHECK menu. Tapemaxs then
matches each number in each tape and alerts you to
              errors found.

ERRORS! SELECTING OK, INFORMATION, OR VIEW:

When errors are found, you can select three
              options. OK, INFORMATION, OR VIEW.

You can edit and change your tape by selecting the
VIEW option. Select INFORMATION if you want to see
the type of errors Tapemaxs detected. Selecting OK
will return you to the main program.

USING EDIT, DELETE, INSERT, AND NEXT ERROR.

EDIT: Two numbers will appear in edit lines just
below the window box. For a complete listing of

DELETE AND INSERT: You can delete, undelete, or
insert a number in either tape.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the number you want
deleted. Then select the DELETE BUTTON directly
below the number you want deleted. (The left
button deletes the number on the left side and the
right button deletes the number on the right side.)

Select insert the same way. See the HELP

selection or manual section "DELETE & INSERT" for
              more details.

NEXT ERROR: The NEXT button finds the next error
in the tape. Review the highlighted numbers and
correct any errors. Select NEXT again to move to
the next error. Continue selecting next until the
errors are corrected. Select OK to compare the
numbers again and make sure your tapes match.

(Note: Not all numbers highlighted are errors.
When comparing two tapes, one number is usually
right and the other wrong. Make sure to check both
numbers or select OK to compare your tapes.)

              EXITING COMPARE.

Leave the compare window by selecting "OK" or
"Cancel." You can also exit, using the ESC key or
selecting the equals sign with a mouse.

Leaving the compare window by selecting "OK" will
compare the two tapes again. If you do not want to
compare tapes select "Cancel" or use the ESC key or
              equals sign (mouse users only).

                            Checking tapes On-Line:

              This section covers:
                   How to use On-Line Checking.
What happens if you make an error.
                   How to use view.

              HOW TO USE ON-LINE CHECKING:

Selecting this feature allows you to check figures
as you enter them. To use On-Line checking you
need to enter the numbers you want checked in
either Tape 1 or Tape 2.

Complete entering all numbers in the first tape,
then switch tapes. (See "Switch" in the manual or
help menu.) After switching tapes select the "On-
Line" option in the "Check" menu. A window will
              confirm that you are ON-LINE.

IMPORTANT - Enter numbers in the second tape in the

same order that you entered them in the first tape.
Example: If the first tape's first number is 25.01
the second tape's first number must be 25.01. It
is very important to keep numbers in sequential
order. The "Compare" option from the "Check" menu
can check numbers not in the same order.

To turn off the On-Line option select it again.
(NOTE: Don't turn off the On-Line option before
you finish checking your tapes. You cannot use the
"On-Line" option again if you do. You can use the
"Compare" feature to check your tapes if you must
              turn off the On-Line option.)

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MAKE AN ERROR:

If you make an error a window appears. The window
has two options, the first is "OK" if the number
you just entered is in error select "OK." The
second option is view. If you cannot determine the
              error select the view option.

              HOW TO USE VIEW.

View will show both tapes. Tape one is on the left
side of the window box. Tape two is on the right
side. Use TAB or mouse to select options. You can
view the tapes with the UP and DOWN arrow keys.

              EDITING, DELETING, AND INSERTING:
Two numbers will appear in edit lines just below
the window box. You can edit either number to
              correct the error.

You can delete, undelete, or insert a number in the
first tape. THE DELETE, UNDELETE AND INSERT
OPTIONS WORK ONLY ON THE FIRST TAPE YOU ENTERED.
The first tape and the second tape do match up to
              the point of error.

              SWAP:
Swap with the arrow pointing to the right will move
the number from the first tape to the second tape.
Swap with the arrow pointing left will move the
number from the second tape to the first tape.

              VIEWING TAPES:
You can view the first and second tape with UP and
DOWN arrow keys. Viewing the tape helps locate
your current position and helps you find errors.

              EXITING VIEW:

                                    Page: 26

Leave the view window by selecting "OK" or
"Cancel." Select the "OK" option if both numbers
match. You can exit without correcting the error
by selecting the "Cancel" option. You can also
exit by using the ESC key or selecting the equals
              sign with the mouse.

right, top to bottom. For an example of this type
of printing see Example C in Appendix D. (NOTE:
Horizontal printing will not underline totals. The
selection DOUBLE UNDERLINE listed below is ignored.
If you select DOUBLE UNDERLINE, the NO LINES option
              is used.)

selection "Formats." (For more information see the
manual section or the help selection entitled
              "Formats.")

              COLUMNS: Select from 3 options.

MAXIMUM PER PAGE -Tapemaxs will calculate the size
of print column to use. (Selecting this option
will minimize the use of paper and ensure that all
              numbers can be printed.)

REGULAR - Each column printed is 27 spaces wide.
(This option may waste paper, for best results use
              Maximum Per Page.)

SPECIFY - You can enter the size of each column to
be printed. The range is from 3 to 99. If the
columns are made to small the full number may not
be printed. For best results use Maximum Per Page.

              TOTAL: Select from 3 options.

DOUBLE UNDERLINE -Prints the total after the last
number with a double underline. (See example A in
              Appendix D.)

NO LINES - Prints the total after the last number
without underline. (See example B in Appendix D.)

NO TOTAL - Total is not printed. This option is
commonly used when the total is printed in a header
or footer. (See example C in Appendix D.)

PRINT TO: Select from 2 options.

PRINTER - Prints to the printer named in "Setup."

FILE - Prints to a file. You will need to enter
the file and dos path in the File Name selection.
              (See below.)

FILE NAME: Enter the name of the file that you
want your tape printed to. To print to a file you
must select option number 2 in the PRINT TO box.

PAPER TYPE: Select from 2 options.

CONTINUOUS FORM - Use this if your printer has
              continuous feed paper.

                                 Printer Setup:

              This section contains:
                   Setting up your printer.
                   Printer ports.
                   Page Width and Length.
                   Common printer configurations.
                   Using Printer Codes.
                   Using notes.

              SETTING UP YOUR PRINTER:

You can setup your printer by selecting "Setup
Printer" from the "Print" menu. This option will
allow you to arrange your printer and set print
codes that can be sent to the printer. Before you
use this option you will need to know:

              1. The printer port that your printer works from.
              2. The page width. (Usually 80)
              3. The page length. (Usually 66)
              4. ASCII value of printer codes you want to send
to your printer. (Not necessary if you do not
                  want to change printer fonts.)

HINT: Use notes to store your printer codes. (So
you won't have to look them up again.)

              PRINTER PORTS:

              Tapemaxs supports 3 printer ports; LPT1, LPT2,
and LPT3. Consult your computer manuals about
information on your printer ports. (Serial ports
are not supported.) You can select the printer
port you need to use by entering 1, 2, or 3.

              PAGE WIDTH AND LENGTH:

Tapemaxs can print tapes in many formatted forms.
You will need to arrange your width and length in
accordance to your printer and paper size. Review
your printer manual for details. (See below for
              common printer configurations.)

              COMMON PRINTER CONFIGURATIONS:

We have included a few common printer page lengths
              and widths for your reference.

ITS A GOOD IDEAL TO SAVE YOUR TAPES TO A FILE
BEFORE YOU PRINT. This will reduce the chances of
              losing data.

Print Style: Page Length Page Width
              Compressed 66 137
              Pica 66 80
              Elite 66 96

              USING PRINTER CODES:

You can send printer codes directly to your
printer. These codes can change the type of
printing that your printer does. Consult your
printer manual for the ASCII decimal value of the
print codes you want to use. The printer code is
sent before any printing is done.

You can enter your print codes by entering the
ASCII decimal value as numbers in the edit line.
You will need to separate each number by a comma.

You can send release codes to your printer by
entering . Then enter the release code as an ASCII
              decimal value.

EXAMPLE: If your printer prints compressed print by
sending 27,05 and requires a release code of 27,18.
              Then you would enter: "27,0527,18"

Consult your printer's manual for the correct ASCII
values. A hexadecimal to decimal conversion chart
is provided in Appendix A. Many printer manuals
use hexadecimal notation for printer codes.

              USING NOTES:

Two lines of notes are provided for your
convenience. You can put your own personal notes
in this space. We recommend you use notes for your
printer codes. This will save you from looking
them up each time you change print styles.

                         Printing Headers and Footers:

(Examples of Headers and Footers can be found in
              Appendix D.)

              This section contains:
                   Using headers and footers.
How to use headers and footers.
                   Special characters for printing.

              USING HEADERS AND FOOTERS:

You can print a header and footer on each page of
your tape. The header and footer can include
Dates, Subtotals, Totals, and Page Totals. The
header and footer can be centered, left or right
              justified.

HOW TO USE HEADERS AND FOOTERS:

Use this option by selecting "Head and Foot" from
the "Print" menu. When you select this option a
window will appear. From the window you can
justify your headers and footers, enter three lines
for each header or footer, and change the date
printed. (See the help menu selection or manual
section "Edit" for a complete list all edit keys.)

              SPECIAL CHARACTERS FOR PRINTING:

You can print totals, subtotals, dates, page
numbers, and page totals in headers or footers.
Following are the special characters used to print
              this information:

*P#* Prints the current page number.
              *D#* Prints the date.
              *S#* Prints the subtotal.
              *T#* Prints the total.
*PT#* Prints the current page total.
*ST#* Prints "Subtotal: " subtotal number; on the
last page prints, "Total: " total number.

Examples can be found in Appendix D, example D.

              CHANGING AND USING NUMBER FORMATS:

You can format your printed numbers by selecting
the "Formats" option on the "Print" menu. When you
select this option you will be presented with a
window containing many format choices. These
choices will determine how your numbers look when
              printed.

              The options are as follows:

All: Will format all numbers on the page
                              in the format listed.

You can change the format of each option listed in
the window. Changing formats gives complete
control over the printed tape. To change formats
select the "Change Formats" button located at the
              bottom of the window.

In the upper portion of the window is a description
of the option to change. The first option is
"ALL". Listed in the lower portion of the window
              is summary of formatting characters.

              changes press the escape key.

              SUMMARY OF FORMATTING NUMBER CHARACTERS:

Below is a short summary of formatting characters.
If no characters are entered then numbers are
              not formatted.

              Character: Description:
0 Digit Placeholder. If the number has
fewer digits on either side of the
decimal point then zeros are shown.
If more numbers exist to the right of
the decimal then numbers are rounded
                           to the number of zeros.
                  # Digit Placeholder. Same as the zero
above except zeros are not displayed.
% Converts number to a percentage.
                  , Thousands separator. Special rules
apply but basic use is to set comma
                           between two placeholders.
                E-E+e-e+ Scientific format. Enter digit
placeholders to the right of this
                           character. The number of placeholders
to the right of this symbol determines
the number of digits in the exponent.
              :-+$()Space Displays that literal character.
\ Displays the next character. Use this
for special characters that you want
to display such as , % etc...
"ABC" Displays the text in the quotes.

Actual examples of different number formats are
contained in Appendix D, Example D.

              SUMMARY OF FORMATTING DATE CHARACTERS:

Explaining the automatic plus and minus.
Using the automatic plus and minus.

EXPLAINING THE AUTOMATIC PLUS AND MINUS:

Tapemaxs has a special automatic feature. This
feature allows you to automatically use a plus or
minus for each number that you enter. When you
first start entering a number a sign appears on the
far left side of the tape display. You can assign
              this number sign a "+" or "-".

USING THE AUTOMATIC PLUS AND MINUS:

You can set the display by selecting either "Auto
Plus" or "Auto Minus" from the "Options menu.

At the number entry display when you press the
enter key the sign (+ or -) is used with the number
you just entered. You can change signs by pressing
the "+" (plus) key or by pressing the "-" (minus)
              key.

(Note: If you are using a color monitor, the color
of the number on the display will not change with
change of signs, until a number key or the enter
              key is pressed.)

Checking the status of a tape:

              This section contains:
How to check the status of a tape.
                   Information provided by status.

HOW TO CHECK THE STATUS OF A TAPE:

You can check the status of a tape by selecting the
"Status" option on the "Options" menu.

              INFORMATION PROVIDED BY STATUS:

Status provides the following information about
              each tape:

              1. The number of numbers that each tape can hold.
(This depends on the amount of memory your
computer has.) The average tape size is 10,000
numbers. The largest possible size is 32,000
                  numbers per tape.

              2. The number of numbers that each tape now has.
(If you have entered only one number in a tape
                  this number would be one.)

              3. The remaining number of numbers that each tape
can hold. This number is the difference
between the number of numbers already entered
in the tape and the maximum number the tape
                  holds.

                            Changing Color Schemes.

              This section contains:
How to select a color scheme.
Changing colors in the color scheme.

HOW TO SELECT A COLOR SCHEME:

You can change your color scheme with up to four
separate options. A list of these choices are
found on the "Options" menu. The options are:
Color Scheme 1, Color Scheme 2, Color Scheme 3, and
Monochrome. Select the color scheme that you find
              most pleasing.

CHANGING COLORS IN THE COLOR SCHEME:

You can change your color schemes in the setup
program that comes with Tapemaxs. Setup will allow
you to customize each color scheme to your own
              tastes.

See the manual "Setup.Txt" for more information on
how Setup can change the color schemes.

                            Fixing Decimal Positions:

              This section contains:
How to fix your decimal point.
                   How fix rounds your numbers.

HOW TO FIX YOUR DECIMAL POINT:

You can fix the decimal position for automatic
entry. Select this option from "Fix Number" on the
"Options" menu. You can fix each number up to four
decimal positions. This decimal position will
automatically enter as you type your number into
              the tape display.

This option works like most calculators and adding
machines. The window contains examples of each
number in a different fixed position. Review them
before you make your selection. Most positions are
set on 2, for dollars and cents.

              HOW FIX ROUNDS YOUR NUMBERS:

This feature also rounds all numbers to the number
of fixed positions (display only). For instance,
if you enter the number 123.456 and have the fixed
position at 2 then the number is displayed as
123.46. The number is 123.456 and does not change
in the tape, but only when displayed.

The rounding occurs ONLY ON THE DISPLAYS. The FULL
NUMBER is NOT CHANGED and is always available for
editing. Use the F2 key to edit the number. The
edit window will display the full number and
              include all decimals.

Full numbers are displayed on the view option, and
              all error correction screens.

                   How to use Tapemaxs Menus.
How to select from a pulled down menu.

              TAPEMAXS FOLLOWS TRADITIONAL WINDOW STANDARDS:

Tapemaxs uses a standard pull-down type menu. The
menu bar is at the top of the screen.

              HOW TO USE TAPEMAXS MENUS:

You start the menu in two ways.

              1. The first: Press the ALT key.

This turns the menu bar on. You can select the
highlighted letter of any option or use the
left and right arrow keys to move the cursor
then press enter. When you press enter or a
letter key the menu will pull down.

              2. Or second: Select the menu bar with a mouse.

Move the mouse cursor to the menu bar.
Position the mouse over the menu selection that
you want. Press the left mouse button and the
                  menu will pull down.

HOW TO SELECT FROM A PULLED DOWN MENU:

When you pull a menu down it will show you all
options under that selection. You can move with
              up and down arrow keys.

Three ways to select the menu option:

              1. Press the Highlighted letter key.

              2. Or use the up and down arrows to highlight the
option and press the enter key.

              3. Or select the item with the mouse and press the
                  left mouse button.

To exit the menu press the escape key, or select
outside the menu with the left mouse button. If
you select an option you will automatically leave
              the menu.

                       Saving your configuration changes.

              This section covers:
                   Configuration changes.
                   Changing Tapemaxs configurations.
                   How to save your changes.

              CONFIGURATION CHANGES:

Configuration changes are changes made to the basic
Tapemaxs configuration. Each time you start
Tapemaxs, it loads your personal configuration
settings from a file. These include, color scheme,
print settings, quick numbers and more.

              CHANGING TAPEMAXS CONFIGURATIONS:

You can change Tapemaxs configuration by selecting
and changing menu options. These changes can be
temporary or permanent. If you want your changes
to be temporary, do not save your configuration
changes. (Temporary changes are changes that are
in effect only while the program is running.) Save
your configuration changes if you want to make the
              changes permanent.

              HOW TO SAVE YOUR CHANGES:

You can save configuration changes manually by
selecting the menu option "OPTIONS" and chosing the
menu item "Save Configuration." When you select
this option the configuration file will be updated
              and your changes are saved.

If you make changes and didn't save them manually
Tapemaxs will prompt you to save changes before the
              program ends.

(NOTE: If your running Tapemaxs from a floppy
disk, make sure you insert the disk that contains
the configuration file "Tapemaxs.cfg" into the
drive that you started Tapemaxs from.)

                        Appendix B Error messages.

This appendix contains the most commonly encountered error
messages. Possible solutions are also listed, please
remember that the solutions listed will not always solve
the problem. If you need help and are a registered user,
         please write us.

         "Overflow, Please check your numbers."

Error occurs when a number is too large. Solution: Reduce
the size of the number being used. (Tapemaxs can handle
numbers the about the same size as the national debt.)

         "Out of Memory"

Error occurs when not enough RAM memory is available to run
Tapemaxs. Solution: Take out unnecessary Terminate and
         Stay Resident programs (TSR).

         "Subscript out of range"

Error occurs while trying to load a tape that is too big to
fit in memory. Solution: Increase Tape size by increasing
/M#### start up option, or removing TSR's from memory.

"Division By Zero, Please check your numbers."

Error occurs when printing. Solution: Check margins, page
size, and page width. Make sure none are set at zero.

         "Device Timeout"

Error occurs when saving files or printing. Solution check
disks (drive doors etc.) and printer for malfunctions.

         "Device Fault"

Error occurs when saving files or printing. Solution check
disk drives and make sure printer is turned on.

         "Out Of Paper"

Error occurs when printing. Solution: Add paper to
         printer.

         "File NOT found"

Error occurs when trying to load a tape file that does not
exist. Solution: Check filename and path.

         "Disk Full"

Error occurs when the disk drive you are saving or printing
to is full. Solution: Use another disk or delete
         unnecessary files.

         "Bad filename"

Error occurs when a bad path or file name is used to print
or save files. Solution: Check file name and path.

         "Too many files"

Error occurs when you open more files than DOS allows.
Solution: Review your DOS documentation on increasing the
number of files that can be used. (Set in Config.Sys
         file.)

         "Device unavailable"

Error occurs when the device is busy or is unavailable.
Solution: This complex error may need some technical
         assistance.

         "Permission denied"

See your DOS documentation. Error involves file types.

         "Disk NOT ready"

Error occurs when trying to print or save files. Solution:
Check your disk drives for possible problems, such as disk
         drive door open etc.

         "Path/File access error"

Error occurs when trying to print or save files to disk.
Solution: Check file and path for correctness.

         "Path NOT found"

Error occurs when trying to save or print files to disk.
Solution: Check the path name used to save or print the
         file.

"Note: You need to enter numbers in one tape."

Error occurs when using the ON-LINE checking feature.
Solution: Make sure that at least one tape has numbers in
it before selecting the ON-LINE option.

"Note: Please make sure at least one tape is blank."

Error occurs when using the ON-LINE checking feature.
Solution: Make sure that at least one tape is blank. ON-
LINE works by checking from the first number of the second
tape entered. (You may want to erase the tape or use the
COMPARE option instead of the ON-LINE feature.)

"Note: Please change your current tape to tape 2."
                                      OR
"Note: Please change your current tape to tape 1."

Error occurs when using the ON-LINE checking feature.
Solution: Select the menu item "Files" and choose "Switch"
or press the shortcut key "F6."

"ONLINE Please enter numbers in order."

NOT an Error. You have successfully started ON-LINE
         checking.

"If you have already installed TAPEMAXS move to the
directory containing the file TAPEMAXS.CFG and restart this
program. Additional help can be found in the manual."

Error occurs when the configuration file for Tapemaxs is
not found. Solution: Move to the directory containing
the configuration file, Tapemaxs.cfg. You can create a
new configuration file with the Setup program. (Setup
is distributed with the registered version of Tapemaxs.)

APPENDIX C: COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

         HOW DOES TAPEMAXS WORK?

Tapemaxs is based on the two tape principle. It matches
the numbers in one tape to the numbers in the other
tape. It finds numbers that do not match and alerts the
         user.

I CAN'T SEE BOTH TAPES AND ONLY THREE NUMBERS OF THE
TAPE I AM WORKING ON. WHERE CAN I SEE MORE?

Tapemaxs has a special feature called View. View is
located in the "Edit" menu selection. View will display
both tapes. View will allow you to edit the tape or add
numbers to the tape. We recommend that you use the
display for making entries since it is faster.

I FORGOT TO TURN THE ON-LINE FEATURE ON AND I HAVE
ENTERED A BUNCH OF NUMBERS IN THE SECOND TAPE ALREADY.
         WHAT CAN I DO?

Finish entering all the numbers in the second tape then
select the "Compare" option in the "Check" menu. This
feature will compare the two tapes and you won't have to
         start over.

WHICH FORM OF CHECKING IS MORE ACCURATE? ON-LINE OR
         COMPARE?

The ON-LINE feature is more accurate at checking
balances and we recommend that you use it most. ON-LINE
checking will catch the exact same inaccurate number
entered at different locations in the tape.

Please note that both methods of checking are much more
accurate than any adding machine. The only error ON-
LINE checking cannot catch is the exact same inaccurate
number entered in the exact same location on both tapes.
