                                ANIMALS

                              Introduction

The ANIMALS computer program is a microcomputer based specialized file
management program designed to assist the archaeozoologist in the essential
tasks of recording, sorting, totalling, and otherwise analyzing fairly large
collections of animal bone remains. The ANIMALS program is written in "C."

The ANIMALS program is implemented to run on an IBM PC using PC-DOS.
A minimum of 256k is required, but additional memory is a great advantage.
Version 3 can be run from a 720k 3.5" floppy disk or a 1.2m high density
5.25" floppy disk, but a hard disk is highly recommended.

                         Installation and Setup

Create a subdirectory titles "ANIMALS" (TYPE md ANIMALS), and change to
it (TYPE cd ANIMALS). Copy all the files on the ANIMALS diskette into this
subdirectory (TYPE copy A:*.*).

To operate correctly, be sure that the line FILES=20 is included in the
CONFIG.SYS file. If it is not use EDLIN or another editor to insert it.

If you wish to use another editor other than the TED editor (c. Ziff
Communication Co.) to process your comments for your faunal file you may include
the line SET NMLSED=<filename> in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or you may invoke
this command before calling ANIMALS. Any pure ASCII editor that will accept its
output filename as a command line parameter will work. (eg. EDLIN <filename>).
The TED editor is available on Compuserve on the PC Magazine Forum (GO
PCMAGNET).

Be sure to inform ANIMALS where to find its code, data, and other files
by setting the necessary disk drive\paths. This may be done by pressing "D"
from the main menu. Type in each drive \ path combination, then press F1 to
file them as defaults.

If you are using an electronic caliper, ANIMALS expects to find its input
on COM1. If you wish to use COM2 include the line SET NMLPORT=2 in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You should set the baud, parity, and stop bits appropriately
using the MODE command (this may also be placed in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file).
See your DOS manual.

The file CODEFILE.COD is a sample code file. The files MAMMAL.CR~ and
BODYPART.CR~ are sample code reassigment criteria files that permit codes to
be assigned to higher order categories.

for using the system.
