MS-04: Diet, Nutrition & Health --------------------------- #0780 Health, Medical, Diet Small Programs Disk --------------------------- First Aid 5.0 (1STAID) (12-93 CD) Marketing Services Corp. of America $25 is a first aid tutorial based on the current standards taught in courses offered by several national organizations. It has been prepared by a Certified First Aid Instructor with many years experience teaching first aid, CPR and basic life support courses. Other features include specific recommendations for a home and work first aid kit, a discussion of the legal and ethical matters to be considered when rendering emergency care, and more. Bite by Byte 1.0 (BITE) Mark, Jonathan S. $15 is the computer implementation of a diet system, the "Structured Eating System." Its goal is to let you eat what you want, but in moderation, with the aim of taking off one pound a week. The program first calculates your ideal weight and then tells you how many calories you are allowed. You may then choose your menu for the day from a long list of foods. (If your food is not on the list, you select an equivalent.) The program seems to have some quirks. For example, after we selected one ounce of candy and then tried to select a drink, it told us we had reached our limit of bread for the day. This may be some type of equivalency calculation, but it was not explained in the docs. Cal-Trak Briggs, Austin $5-$15 is a calculator that will allow you to figure out how many calories you can or will burn up with certain activities. The calculator is based on the calorie burn rate of an average 150 pound person with a pound lost for each 3,500 calories burned, which the author says should be close enough to give you a ball-park figure. On the other hand, who wants a figure like a ball park? (Sorry.) CVRisk calculates your risk of having cardiovascular problems. The basic file is just the source code. Run CVRISK.EXE. Genie (GENIEJD) Davis, Jim $? purports to be more accurate than the old height, age and weight charts. It has you measure various parts of your body. Oddly enough, it doesn't care how tall you are, so a short person whose forearm size, etc, is the same as someone who is very tall, is expected to weigh the same as the tall person. Heart Lind, Merrill J. $10 is a program that gives the breakdown of fats (in grams), cholesterol and sodium in foods that are very common. Statistics and recommendations are from the 1984 National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference. This program is for anyone who wants to watch their diet for a healthier heart and lower blood cholesterol levels. Heart Smart (HRTSMRT) Henning Associates $10 monitors your calorie, fat, and cholesterol intake for a meal, or for a day. You can edit, delete or add to the 900 item food list. Items that are not food-related can also be added. For example: if you bike, and for every minute of cycling, you burn 10 calories. Theses calories can be subtracted from your daily intake. LifeTime tells you how long you are going to live, if you really want to know. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #0780 -------------------------------- ------------------------ #2677 Health and Diet #2 Small Programs Disk ------------------------ DealMeal (DEALMEA) Weinstein, Michael P. Galley Master 2.0 (GALLEYM) Ponanon Systems $15 turns your plain resistance type rowing machine (hydraulic cylinder type, as opposed to spinning disk or other type) into one of those fancy computerized ones. The screen changes color and the speaker sounds the drum to insure that you row at the correct rate. There are graphics of skully rowing across lake to illustrate progress. At the end of the exercise period, the program prompts you to take your pulse and enter it into the computer. Your pulse, combined with data such as your age and your time in the program, are used to customize the workout to insure that maximum results are achieved safely with minimal investment of time. LEx Health Management Systems $20 predicts your life expectancy based on information you give it. (The authors are no longer at the address provided in the documentation.) Remedies (REMEDS) B.M.W. Programs $? lets you choose an ailment and see which herb will help, or select an herb and see which ailment it will help. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #2677 -------------------------------- ------------------------ #4925 Health and Diet #3 Small Programs Disk ------------------------ Cycle Master 2.0 (BIKER) Ponanon Systems $10 is for those of you who workout with a stationary bicycle. The program leads you through a structured workout, consisting of a warm-up, a workout and a cooldown period. The screen changes color and the speaker sounds the drum to insure that you cycle at the correct rate, although you will probably (we tempted to use Silencer, disk #2006) to remove the program's speaker output because of the extremely irritating sirens at the beginning and end of the program. A bicyclist at the top of the screen illustrates your progress. EGA/VGA required. Good Health Using Herbs (HERBS) Long, Kathy $15 is an electronic book about herbs and health. Eater's Choice is a system that allows you to choose foods that you want to eat while you lower your blood cholesterol. The program is slick, fast and easy to use, but is clearly flawed when it comes to calculating the ideal weight for a 6'4" male of medium frame (said an overweight 6'4" male of medium frame). It creates all the directories and sub-directories but leaves them empty and then jams the system." PsL: We came up with the same results installing from the MegaDisk, however, when we install from floppies the program installs properly. Since the files are in ZIP format you could manually unZip all the files but you don't know which directory to place them. We have written to the author and hope to receive another copy of the program that can be installed from one high density disk, not just two floppies.
