A graphic picture is displayed and the child must fill in the blanks to spell the name of it. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8799.) SpellB 1.2 (12-93 CD) Jarrett, Eric $13 is a spelling tutor. The words are displayed for only a second and once you have spelled the word it lets you know if you did it right or wrong. A score is given after each session, and you can print a list of words you spelled incorrectly. Spell Games (SPELLGA) Elliott, Alan ASP $20 is a spelling teacher disguised as an Olympic game. Choice of difficulty is allowed from very easy words to difficult words. Words can be added to the extensive list and the length of time the word is viewed can also be altered. The author of this program tells us that it was tested by a fifth grade youngster for several weeks who went on to win her school's spelling bee! Vocabulary Primer 1.1 (VOCPRMR) Latkowski, Denis L. $27 is a vocabulary tutor for grades 9-12. This program teaches punctuation and inversion. It is designed for those who have a good command of English, but who find certain features somewhat puzzling. Pop quizzes are provided throughout. Animated Words 1.0 Guthery, Tom $12 #27768/4411 [2 disks] is a spelling program for children from pre-school through first grade. The child must match a word with its picture. By correctly matching a word, pieces are added to a puzzle making it animated. There are a variety of words and animated puzzles with digitized speech. Requires 640K RAM and EGA/VGA. Balloon Speller KIDware $12 #20010/1873 allows children to play three different spelling games using lists of words you input. In each game, a hot air balloon is moved around the screen to pick up needed letters. In "Word Flash," the word to be spelled is flashed on the screen and then must be spelled from memory. In "Word Jumble," the letters of the word are scattered around and must be picked up in proper order. In "Word Guess," the letter must be guessed in a Hangman type game. We had some bizarre problems that we could not isolate on some machines. Balloon Speller locked up a 386-25 with VGA under DESQview. On an AST-286 with monographics and DESQview, it ran fine, but locked up the machine on exit from the program. On a different AST-286 with VGA and DESQview, it performed flawlessly. There are questions involving learning the alphabet, simple monosyllabic words, word roots, and advanced vocabulary words. This program may helpful in preparing for the SAT, ACT and GRE exam in verbal skills. Zpeller 3.00 [ZPLR300] Unicorn Software Limited, ASP $20 #20010/4321 [March 1994 CD] helps improve spelling and vocabulary. It can be used for an individual or an entire classroom. The program works with up to 19 students at once, each having their own list of words, defaults, and files. Seven different types of tests can be conducted and there is an option of retest for missed words after completion of the first test. Crazy Tales JudSoft $15 #20204 [2 disks] is a fun way for kids (or adults) to learn grammar. You enter a list of nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives which are then plugged into a story. Dollars and Dinosaurs 1.0b Right to Left Software ASP $29 #20107 [2 disks] helps develop reading and writing skills for children ages 3 and up. It offers 11 levels of language and spelling activities including flash cards, spelling, matching written words to a picture and recognition of moving letters. There is a cash payoff in Dinosaur Dollars. A musical tune is played and the currency is issued on the printer after correctly spelling or matching ten words. Each word is illustrated with high resolution animated graphics, making this a fun and entertaining way to learn. Requires hard disk, 640K RAM, and VGA. Jurassic Spelling 2.0 [J_SPL20] Motes, Dr. Andrew ASP $24 20381 [February 1994 CD] is a fun spelling game for children which also serves as a tutorial on dinosaurs. The screen presents your child with a word to be spelled. A human voice can also be chosen to spell out the word as it appears on the screen. The word then disappears and the child must type in the correct spelling. After typing several words correctly, a colorful image of a dinosaur will appear, along with a description. Musical rewards can also be chosen for each correctly spelled word. Jurassic Spelling allows you to enter a set of words to be spelled, such as your child's spelling homework or a set of difficult words to spell. Requires VG Vocabulary Overdrive 1.1 [VOCOVRDR] Sevarlic, Zoran $23 #7656/3913 (12-93 CD) is an effective, vocabulary-building program with over 1300 words, definitions, example sentences and roots at the SAT level as well as the more advanced. It keeps track of your weaknesses, and gives you more practice in those areas. Requires 512K and a hard disk or high density floppy. Memory Master Bajorek, Benjamin T. $20 #7656/3515 allows you to create up to 250 on-screen flash cards for memorizing vocabulary, foreign languages, etc. Non-English characters are supported. Some positive and negative comments are built into the program, or you can add your own comments. SpellBound! Casey, Kenneth R. Jr. $15-$35 #7656/3093 is a spelling tutor for use by one or multiple students, with records and personalized word lists available for each. In the belief that seeing the incorrect spelling would create an incorrect visual reinforcement, the program only allows the correct letters to be displayed. Words can be up to 36 characters in length and you can shuffle words within a set so that they are not presented in the same order. The program has a "child mode" with music and graphics, but it can also be used by adults for learning professional or technical terms, etc. Requires 384k RAM. The data files that come with the program seem to be aimed at the Junior or Senior high school level. Verbal Vanquish 2.0 [VVFILE] Bair, James $5 #7657/3009 [March 1994 CD] provides preparation for the Scholastic Achievement Test's verbal portion. The emphasis here is on test-taking strategies, and numerous examples and tips are included. This was written by a high school English teacher and is very well done. Requires 512K RAM. Vocable-Pro 4.5 Hell-Turler, Dr. K. Th. $0-$10 #7657/2955 is a unique vocabulary program that keeps a nine-level log of learning progress for each set of words. It automatically adjusts the testing algorithm to ensure best learning results. You must type in your own vocabulary words as part of the learning process. All special characters supported by DOS can be entered, allowing the creation of a vocabulary list in most foreign languages. Color is supported, but no special graphics are required. A German language version is included. WordMaster Johnson, Mark $? #7657/3291 will help to build and improve your vocabulary. The program contains both a word testing module to reinforce existing vocabulary, and a dictionary building module to help encourage you to learn new words. Mouse support included. Adults will enjoy this game as well as children. WordTrix Tea Time Software ASP $20 #20011/4171 is a game that helps elementary school children learn phonic concepts. This program covers words with similar sounds but different meanings, nonexistent words, and improper word forms.
