Normally, we would not add a program like this to the library because it is in uncompiled BASIC, requiring the user to have IBM BASIC or GWBASIC, and the "shareware version" only includes two of the five sets of drills. However, after comparing it to other Spanish tutors, we found it to contain more words and have a more logical approach, in our opinion. Mexican Slang (MEXSLNG) In One EAR Publications $10 is a guide to the hip talk and lewd eloquence of the Spanish used commonly by modern Mexicans. This is the way the teens, yuppies, cholos, outlaws and in-laws talk. If you have learned Spanish in school, you'll will welcome the wealth of "real world" talk presented here. (Do you know why a nice girl might not want to order "huevos for breakfast?) The words and expressions in this program are not in a standard dictionary. WARNING: Contains adult language. Span-Eng is a Spanish to English vocabulary drill. Requires Basic. Spanish Campbell, George $0 is a Spanish phrasebook that talks. Thirty-six useful phrases for travellers can be selected from a one-screen menu. The digitized voice is excellent for the little speaker in the PC. It does not work on Compaq and Sharp portables. You can view the Hiragana and Katakana character sets and answers can be typed with Japanese characters. Japanese character keyboards resemble the keyboards of Japanese word-processing equipment. Japanese characters may be printed with a dot-matrix or laser printer. An extensive lesson glossary and a dictionary with conjugated verbs and true adjectives are provided. Grammar is covered extensively in this program. Requires 640K memory, 1meg of hard disk space, EGA/VGA, and DOS 3.3+. Japanese For Business & Travel Bernstein, Richard #20009/712 is a tutorial composed of questions about vocabulary, grammar, and culture. The course assumes no prior knowledge of Japanese. It even starts with a little Japanese music to put you in the right frame of mind. Included as part of the program is a sample of a program for learning the Katakana (Japanese characters). However, when we tried to run that part of the program , it locked up our machines, so don't try menu item 7. The rest of the program seems to run all right. Kapian Mosier, Phil $35 #20009/3364 helps you learn the Chinese language using a flash card approach. You can select either Long or Short Form characters and romanization, with ten different testing displays provided. The program also draws all the characters on the screen one stroke at a time, in correct stroke order and at user-adjustable speeds. Early Spanish DareWare, Inc. ASP $33 #20192 [2 disks] is a bilingual (Eng./Span.) program which teaches numbers and simple math. With a sound card, the questions are heard in both languages. You can turn off one language to teach kids the other language. French Word Power BC Enterprises Software $19 #4816 will help French students build their vocabulary. It includes a total of 1200 words with sentences, and 400 sentences for translation. Words are broken down into Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives/Misc. Adverbs, prepositions, and pronouns are included. Up to 400 hundred new words can be added. The current words can be replaced or modified. Each category is broken up into 20 tests of 20 words each. Testing formats include multiple choice and matching. German Tyler, Thomas E. $10 #3514 is an English to German and German to English dictionary and translator program. It can translate words and phrases as well as "sounds like". You can add, change, delete and search for words. There is an English to German or German to English quiz. You may print a complete dictionary of all the words in the data file, sorted in any order you like. There are only 68 words in the provided dictionary, but you can add as many words as you like to the data file. German Vocabulary Drill 1.0 [GERMAN] Traver, Barry A. $20 #12674 (12-93 CD) is a German vocabulary driller.The program also has back-ground music and sound effects. German Word Ladder 2.12 Widergren, Paul R. $12-$22 #4134 is a series of programs for studying German vocabulary and grammar. The program comes with 20 data files, including 12 noun files grouped according to subject and four verb files. Additional files can be created using any word-processor which can save files in ASCII-format. The program was written by a high school German teacher. Hebrew Tutorial Program Rapier, David $20 #1243 is a vocabulary program designed to guide a student through an entire first year in biblical Hebrew. It is based on the book, Introduction to Biblical Hebrew, by Thomas O. Lambdin. The program has Hebrew-English, English-Hebrew quizzes for every Hebrew word appearing 10 or more times in the Old Testament plus some that appear fewer times. It has thousands of verb forms with an option to be quizzed on meaning or parsing. Richard Gordon, Seattle, WA, reports that this will not work on his fully-expanded PCjr. He says "The problem appears to be that the program was compiled using Borland's Turbo BASIC. Unless a patch is used, none of Turbo BASIC's output will run on any PCjr, cutting programmers off from 500,000 potential users." The patch is available on the IBM forum on CompuServe. Since the program does not drill you on using the words in sentences, this program cannot be used by itself to learn Spanish, but it looks like a good supplement and an excellent way for people studying Spanish to drill on vocabulary. It translates single words and phrases and shows a phonetic spelling of what the word or phrase should sound like. There is an English to Spanish or Spanish to English quiz. The object of the game is to move the French flag along a pre-defined route across France while using the least amount of gasoline as possible. An extensive set of files for learning Spanish is included, but you can create your own files for any subject. The innovative approach used by this program is to rearrange questions or language phrases based on whether or not you got them right. The result is that the more often you answer a particular prompt correctly, the less often you will be drilled on it, and conversely, the more you will be drilled on incorrect responses. The program is well designed and easy to use. Another nice feature is the ability to search all of your files for a particular word or phrase. ]]]]]
