It can give you attributes on an item, and can also execute a file. It only supports drives A, B, and C. A mouse is required. DropDesk 1.0 (DRPDESK) Harmony Data Systems $0 lets you execute files by dragging and dropping them from the File Manager to the Desktop. MVWin 1.0 Micro Magic $10 allows files and entire directories to be moved, copied, or deleted. A graphic trash can is used for disposing of unwanted files. Window Commander 1.1 (WINCMDR) DiMauro, David K. $20 is a general purpose file manager and program launcher. It lets you view, edit, and launch applications. VBRUN is required. WinSort 1.0 Overmyer, Doug $0 will sort very large ASCII files in memory. Fextend 1.6 Gamber, Mark $0 is a unique add-on to Windows 3.1 File Manager. It provides several handy utilities available from the File Manager menu bar. The Trash Can allows you to drag files to an icon to delete them, and the Time Clock will stamp the current date and time on files dragged to its icon. You can also select and deselect various attributes including archive, read only, hidden and system bits. Fill Diskette 1.1 (FILDISK) Pounds, J.A. $5 lets you transfer files from a directory to a diskette. It selects files so they will fit on a diskette with zero bytes remaining. Verification, sort, and move options are provided. This is a great way to save time and floppy disk space when backing up large subdirectories. MRU File Manager (MRUFM) Miller, Ron $0 Most Recent Used File Manager keeps track of the last five applications in an icon form and allows you to run apps and any files that were opened with them. Requires VBRUN100.DLL. VB source code is included. PrintDir.DLL (PRNTDIR) Foster, David $10 is an add-on that lets you print directory listings from the Windows File Manager. Listings can be sorted by Name, Date or Size, or you can list only the currently selected files. Windows Dialog Extenders 1.42 (WDE) (08-93 CD) SP Services $20 adds several File Manager-type functions (delete, make directory, make backup, etc.) to all file dialogs supplied by Windows 3.1. You can customize how many function buttons are added, the size of the buttons, confirm on delete, and more. The dropped file is represented by an icon, and to launch the application you simply double click on the icon. You can also drag a file onto the icon to have it launched from within that application. Requires WIN31. File Notes 1.0 (FILENOT) Sloop Software, ASP $20 [Jan. 1994 CD] allows you to attach descriptive notes to a file or group of files within File Manager. You may include an author, subject and a lengthy comment in the note. This is apparently NOT compatible with Norton Desktop for Windows. Rummage Schlackman, Robert $10 helps locate and remove duplicate files from your hard drive. Once the drive is scanned, you can drag and drop files to a waste can for removal. You can also move selected files, and perform a CRC check to make sure they are identical. This is an excellent way to clean up your hard disk, and can also be used as a file search utility. Requires VBRUN200. Stamper 1.00 Looking Glass Technologies $10 allows you to quickly change the date/time stamp on a file. The program maintains up to five different date/time configurations, and all you have to do is drag a file onto an icon to change its settings. WFApMenu (WFAPMEN) Foster, David $10 adds a handy applications menu to File Manager. It allows you to launch a program without having to be in the directory where the program resides. WTouch 1.1 Overmyer, Doug $0 lets you reset the date/time stamp on a group of files to the current system date/time. You simply drag a file you want deleted to the program's icon, and it makes an image of the file that can be retrieved if you change your mind. Image files are given unique names to allow for multiple instances of a deleted file. Options are provided to compress the image files to conserve disk space. Image files can be manually erased or automatically erased after a specific number of days. Toilet Frazier, Robert E. $5 is a unique file deletion utility for Windows 3.1. You simply drag a file or group of files from File Manager to the toilet icon. These files then become hidden, and are not actually deleted until you "flush" (complete with a watery sound effect). Files can be restored prior to "flushing". Trash 1.0B (TRSH-AL) AnarkSoft Ltd. $0 is an animated file deletion utility. You simply drag a file from File Manager, and drop it on the toilet-shaped icon. The lid opens, and the file goes "down the drain". An option is provided to delete subdirectories also. Trash Can 1.4 (TRASHCN) Priority Software, Inc. $0 is a drag-and-drop file deletion utility for Windows 3.1 File Manager. You simply drag a file or set of files to the trash can icon, and they are deleted without requiring the usual confirmation that File Manager demands. Trash Manager 2.0a (TRSHMAN) (09-93 CD) Checkbox Software $29 (formerly TrashCan for Windows) effectively emulates the Macintosh trashcan. You can drag files from File Manager into it, and they will be moved to a hidden directory. Double-clicking on the icon brings up a list of files that can then be deleted or restored to their original location. CyberWindows 1.1 (CYBRWIN) Martin, Wendell $0 is an interface for Windows based upon cyberspace as described in William Gibson's novels. In these novels, programmers enter the computer network through neural jacks and "see" it directly. With this program icons are displayed floating on a neon-blue grid. As you navigate around the grid, distant icons become larger as you approach while nearby icons disappear behind you as you pass them by. VBRUN required. Desktop Helper 1.4 (DHELPER) Alleger, Robert E. $17 provides capabilities missing from Program Manager while also providing the more important capabilities of Task Manager. Features include convenient pop-up menu available from any window, configurable launch list of frequently executed programs, switch to or terminate a task, arrange Desktop windows and icons, exit Windows without being queried about saving Desktop changes, a pop-up file selector browser to choose a file to run, WIN31 support, and more. It uses less than 17K of memory when not in use, and less than 4k when active. ExitW (EXITWDS) Stafford, David $0 lets you quickly exit Windows. Ideal for use with Launch (below). Half-Shell 1.0 (HAFSHEL) Stephens, Troy $0-$5 is a minimal shell replacement for Program Manager and File Manager that allows you to load and exit windows much faster. The executable file is only 12K and reads only one INI file. A configurable "Launch List" provides instant access to 26 applications. Also included is Swap-Shell which lets you easily switch between Half-Shell and your favorite full-sized shell. Launch 2.7 Stafford, David $30 lets you conveniently start up your favorite programs from a configurable pop-up menu, without having to go through File Manager or Program Manager. This can be used as a virtual replacement for Program Manager, and uses less memory. The menu can be optionally popped-up with a hotkey, and programs can be launched minimized or maximized. A setup utility is included for easy installation. This is one of the most useful utilities we have seen for Windows. Launch Utility Set 2.0 (L-UTIL) (08-93 CD) Stafford, David $10 is a set of utilities for use with LAUNCH (above): PAPER 1.0 lets you instantly change your wallpaper to any BMP or RLE file. MOUSY 1.3 will display the mouse if it is hiding, and refreshes the screen. SNAPSHOT 1.1 takes a picture of the desktop and copies it to the clipboard. MINIMIZE 1.0 will minimize (iconize) all the programs on your Windows desktop. RUN-MAC 1.2 is a tiny program which will run a Windows Recorder macro. Other utilities are included to restart/reboot Windows, tile/ cascade Windows, and arrange icons. LaunchPad 1.01 (LNCHPAD) (12-93 CD) Acelong Ltd. $15 is a powerful task switcher, application launcher and document manager for Windows 3.1. It features a user-configurable popup menu that lets you assign your favorite applications and commonly-used documents to a list. Adding new items to the list is extremely simple, and the application list can be accessed in a variety of ways. This is an excellent way to help increase your desktop productivity. Lutils Schless, Dan $0 contains three utilities primarily for use with LAUNCH (above): Run, which is similar to the PM's RUN, LoadRun, which lets you edit the LOAD= and RUN= lines of WIN.INI, and NullWin, which corrects the unavailability of separators in LAUNCH. Windows Run! 2.1 (WINRUN!) Safdie, B.J. $0 makes a run dialog box available from the LAUNCH (above) menu. It makes user-defined applications available with a single click of the mouse or press of a key. All of the Windows Desktop Accessories are available on the same menu. Up to six independent menus can be constructed with up to ten selections per menu. Selections may be Windows applications or DOS programs. NeXT Application Bar 2.2 (NEXT-AB) Pheow, Lee Cjin $15 is a menu program inspired by the vertical Application Bar on the NeXT computer. It allows you to create a scrolling display of up to 50 applications, complete with icons. It can replace Program Manager as your primary Windows Shell. Statline 2.1 (STATLIN) Bell, James $10-$15 supplements the Program and File Managers. And while you are not using it for those functions, it displays the mode, day, date, time, and amount of free memory at the bottom of your screen. WinDock 1.5 Capson, Brian $15 is an incredibly simple menu utility for WIN31. To setup an application, you just drag it's icon from File Manager into Windock's menu bar on the side of the screen. You can then execute the program by double clicking on the icon. Up to 11 programs can be installed. WinEZ 3.1b (WINEZ) 01-94 CD New Generation Software Ltd. $35 allows you to start applications and switch tasks without ever having to leave the application you are using. It adds two icons to the active window's title bar. The first icon provides a "Power Menu" of all Groups currently in the Program Manager, and a sub-menu of each group's contents. Another icon allows you to directly switch to any active application on the desktop. This lets you run your programs maximized at all times, without having to find a clear space to bring up the Windows Task List. The program also provides an enhanced Run facility that offers an easy way to navigate through directories and start applications. It also features file filtering and quick retrieval of the last five commands executed. Program Manager groups and Norton Desktop groups are supported, and a Task List icon lets you terminate any active Windows application quickly. This is a very well done and useful utility, and is 3.1 compatible. WinList (11-93 CD) Holcomb, Russell E. $0 is a unique application launching system for WIN31. You simply drag a a file from File Manager onto the WinList window, where you can add a descriptive name of up to 35 characters, specify a startup directory, run the application minimized, and more. Up to 48 applications can be placed on the list. WinMenu2 (WINMEN2) Hamilton Services $25 is a simple and efficient replacement for Program Manager that consists of a single menu bar. Easy Access 1.1 (EASYACC) (08-93 CD) Browns Computerworks $10 is a tiny program launcher for Windows 3.1. Up to 100 items can be added to the launch list. The program's icon is about half the size of a standard icon, so it can stay on top of other applications without getting in your way. Other features include a graphic resource monitor, four-page note keeper, and a quick run dialog box. VBRUN200 is required. KBDock 1.1 Keith Burton Consulting $20 provides an icon-based "application bar" for launching programs. Features include multiple nested menus, drag and drop support, fast operation with cached icons, and descriptive titles for each icon. VBRUN is required. MenuBar 1.1 MRL $30 lets you create customized menubars to launch applications in Windows 3.1. Toolbars with icons or bitmaps are created using a simple set of dialogs for your favorite programs, or you can design a complete desktop environment. You have complete control over keyboard/mouse usage, size and shape of the menubar, and nested menus. Other features include caption bars, drag and drop execution, and much more. Several sample files and icons are included. ProMenu/S 1.0 (PROMENU) Cain International Corporation $25 provides convenient 3-D pop-up menus for any Windows 3.1 application. All you have to do is click the right mouse button and a menu with all of the current application's menu items appears. This is an incredibly easy way to increase your desktop productivity. Stars (STARSDS) Stafford, David $0 animates the desktop with a lot of moving stars, creating an effect similar to looking through a spaceship window. It also provides a cheap-O method of launching other Windows applications. Notepad, Command (DOS shell), WinHelp, DOS Executive and Calc are supported. Mouse support is provided. WinLaunch 4.0 (WL40) Holcomb, Russell E. $0 [March 1994 CD] is a launch bar with a difference for WIN31+. It allows you to control where and what size any application's window starts. It can also control the positioning of icons on the desktop. Other features include a clock and resource monitor. Auto-Raise 1.11 (AUTORAS) Nee, Robert F. $10 allows you to switch among windows on the screen simply by placing the mouse cursor over the window for a user specified amount of time. The time delay can be set from 0 to 3 seconds in 1/4 second intervals. It can also open icons into windows. File Clerk (FILCLRK) Peoples, David $0 lets you add icons to Program Manager that will let you select files and launch applications. Instead of loading the desired application and having to click thorugh its file loading drive/directory boxes, File Clerk lets you specify during set-up of the icon a default directory and file type. You can have multiple icons for the same application, so that you can more quickly locate the files you want to work on. The TPW source code is available under Windows Programming. GroupWorker 1.2 (GRPWRKR) Miller Software $10 lets you launch groups of programs with a single mouse click. Groups are easily established and changed in the setup screen by simply choosing the applications from a scrollable list. Applications can be started in a Normal or Minimized window. A sample application group is provided. VBRUN is required. GRP Schless, Dan $0 displays program groups and their member applications. Double clicking on a group title displays all members in the group, and double clicking on a group member name displays the command line and the icon file name. Max and Min 1.0 (MAXMIN) Mezaros, Mike $0 gives you the option of launching a program Maximized or Minimized. VBRUN reqd. PIF Helper 2.0 (PIFHELP) Digital Solutions $40 lets you select from up to eight pre-specified start-up directories when you load an application from the Program Manager. For example, when loading Word for Windows, you could make a Letters directory the default, or Contracts, etc. PMhotkey 1.5c (PMHOTKY) Priority Software, Inc. $0 lets you bring Program Manager to the top of other open windows with a keypress. This will also work with NDW. If you're tired of having to ALT-TAB your way back to Program Manager, this utility could save you a lot of time. Power Launch 2.1 (PLAUNCH) Digital Solutions $15 lets you select a working directory when launching an app. Runner 1.0 Silver, Howard $0 allows you to run frequently used programs and batch files from an icon. Simply define command line parameters, and create a list of programs. When you run the program, the items you have specified appear as icons on the bottom of the screen. To run them, just double-click on the icon. RunProg 1.05 Feinleib, David $10-$12 allows you to run a program at a specified desktop size. Size options include maximized, minimized, normal, hidden, or coordinates that you specify. WinRun Duffett, Bob $0 allows setting of the default sub-directory and the initial display mode. No modification of the PATH environment is needed. the startup display mode can be default, MINimized or MAXimized. C source code is included. Zoom 1.1 (WINZOOM) Electron Image Inc. $0 lets Program Manager groups zoom in and out of position just like folders in the Macintosh MultiFinder. Padlock for Windows 1.00 (PADLOCK) Pocket Change Software $13 [February 1994 CD] is a security add-on package for Program Manager. You can customize the level of security by choosing which Program Groups to remain visible, adding password security access to many functions, preventing file save options, limiting access to DOS, and much more. Requires VBRUN300. PM Fonts Chooser 1.0 (PMFNTS) VB Expressions $5 lets you easily customize the font used by ProgMan for group and icon titles. Any font installed on your system can be used, and you can also choose the font size. A feature is provided to quickly restore the default font if you aren't pleased with the changes. Requires WIN31 and VBRUN200. PM Icons 1.01 (PMICON) (11-93 CD) Hess, Olaf $0 lets you assign individual icons to program manager groups. It also provides a new exit dialog, giving you options to exit Windows, restart Windows, or reboot your system. This is a great way to help customize your desktop. Requires WIN31. Program Manager Modifier 2.0 (PMM) Walker, Tim $5 lets you add customized pull-down menus to the menu bar of the Program manager or other shells such as Norton's. Although menus are not as flashy looking as a screen full of colorful icons, you can get to and launch applications much faster from the PMM menus. Requires WIN31. QuickLaunch 1.0 (QLAUNCH) CheckBox Software $18 lets you pop up a "Run..." window by pressing Shift-F9 at any time. It has a Browse window like Program Manager, but unlike PM, it remembers the last drive and directory you went to, so you don't have to repeatedly search for the same directory. Requires VBRUN. RestrictProgMan 1.00 (RPM) (08-93 CD) Mittermaier, Uli $5 allows you to disable some of Program Manager's functions. You may deactivate the Exit Windows and File/Run selections, the entire File-menu, and the Save Settings on Exit option. Win Group 1.1 (WINGRP) Holcomb, Russell E. $0 [Feb. 1994 CD) reads WIN31 ProgMan groups and places the group names alphabetically on a button list. When you click on a group button, an alphabetical list of group items is shown. A single click on a group item launches the program. This is a fast way to launch applications, and consumes very little desktop space. WorkSpace 1.0 (WRKSPAC) BoneHead Software $7 launches a group of applications that you commonly use together for a project. Programs within a group can be started as normal, minimized, maximized, or with a specified location and size. Groups can be launched from a command line or from a buttonbar, so you can easily create a group item with an icon in Program Manager. A single click on this icon displays a popup list of all programs running. Other features include a time/free memory display, an exit Windows option, a handy run dialog, and more. IconMan 1.4 (ICOMAN) Harmony Data Systems $20 [Feb. 1994 CD] replaces iconized applications with a single small window of buttons. An option is provided to select which programs you want represented in the window or left on the desktop, and you can even iconize the task window. This is a great way to organize your desktop. Requires WIN31 and at least a two-button mouse. Quick Switch 1.01 (QSWITCH) Yoshimura, K. $5 is a graphic replacement for Task Manager. It lets you hold down the right mouse button and see a list of all windows currently open, or you can instantly minimize all windows. The scrollable task list displays icons and associated window names, and you simply double-click on the desired icon to activate the corresponding window. SoftBlox SmartTasks (SMRTASK) SoftBlox Inc. $30 is a powerful graphic replacement for Windows 3.1 Task Manager. It can also launch programs from Program Manager groups. Other features include an alarm clock, memory gauge, a free disk space display, compatibility with Norton Desktop, sound functions, WIN31 drag and drop support, and more. App Director QPC Solutions, Inc. $39 #20004/4445 is a powerful desktop menu system for Windows. It allows you to automatically launch applications whenever Windows starts up, or at a specified date and/or time. It can automatically read Program Manager group files to create a menu. The desktop menu is easily configured, supports up to four levels of sub-menu items, and includes a powerful Run Application dialog with history. It is network friendly, and features an automated installation. Other features include hotkey support, password capabilities, advanced user levels, and more. It can be run as a shell in place of Program Manager. Real Mode is not supported. ButtonStar Plus 5.0.4 [BSTAR5] (12-93 CD) DiBiasio, Mark $28 #20004 (formerly ButtonBar Plus) is an icon-based menu system for Windows 3.1. It uses colorful icon buttons to launch programs. The display also provides the date and time, percentage of free system resources, and available RAM. Other features include drag and drop configuration, popup alarms, and application scheduler, popup task manager, and more. When the cursor touches an icon button a description of the button appears at the top of the display. The program is very easy to set up and use, and is a respectable replacement for Program Manager. Requires VBRUN300, a hard disk, and VGA. Click! Filer The TrogloByte $20 #20004/3867 is a very attractive combination of the Program Manager and File Manager. The main display is a Source directory file listing on the left and a Destination directory file listing on the right, each with a path window for easy changing of directories. Push Buttons below them make it easy to copy, move, execute, rename or delete files or directories. Another set of 12 pushbuttons takes the place of the Program Manager. Multiple sets of button assignments may be made, with each set replacing a Program Group in the Program Manager. Up and down arrow buttons scroll quickly through the program sets and the name of the current set is displayed below the icon on the Windows desktop. A pull-down menu gives you access to external archivers: PKZip, PKPak, LHarc, Pak and Arc. CT-Shell 2.21 Computer Training $35 #20004/4642 is an application launcher/file management package. A host of additional features are provided, including a batch file processor, a command line interface, event schedular and alarm clock, and phone database with automatic dialer. It uses a simple drag and drop interface, and can read icons from any .DLL or .EXE file. Other features include palette management, icon import/export, a quick application launcher, restart/reboot options, online help, and more. SideBar Lite Paper Software, Inc. $30-$40 #20006/4141 is a replacement for Program Manager and File Manager. The main display, a customizable vertical bar on the side of the screen, has a small DOS command line over a directory listing. Unlike the regular DOS prompt, when you enter the name of a program at the SBLITE "DOS prompt", it will be executed whether it is a DOS app or a Windows app. It automatically copies the Program Manager Group structure into its on menu system, so you can remove the Program Manager completely. This presents you with a way of reducing the load on system resources substantially (even to zero, if necessary). When apps are minimized/iconized, their icons appear neatly arranged in the icon bar instead of scattered randomly across the bottom of the screen. This is an excellent utility, with lots of customizable options.
