Requires 286+ and 640K RAM. [GALACTIX] Galactix 1.3A (Cygnus Software; $15) is a deep space, shoot-em-up arcade game with digitized sound, music soundtrack, and professional quality graphics. The overall play of the game is pretty-much standard space shoot-em-up, but with a couple of twists, and with beautiful graphics and support for joystick, mouse, and a sound card for music and sound effects. [GVT203] Graviton 2.03 (Daniel A. Sill; $10) is an excellent simulated vector graphics space game. You fly into a solar system and if you can get past enemy ships and if you don't let gravity pull you into the sun, then you go to each of the planets. This is a must-have for arcade game lovers. [KILOBLST] Kiloblaster 1: Death of a Starship (Epic MegaGames ASP; $30) is a fantastic, arcade quality shoot-em-up space game. It features 30 levels of non-stop action, SoundBlaster compatible music and sound effects, beautiful ray-traced graphic backgrounds, joystick support, and much more. As the Captain of the Starship Kiloprise you must stop an enemy horde from conquering the Earth. As you blast away at the unending avalanche of aliens, you can gather fruit and other objects that increase your firepower. Requires 512K, EGA/VGA, and 286+. [SHOOTING] Shooting Gallery (Anderson, Nels, ASP; $10) is a terrific arcade shooting game with several different challenges. The shooting gallery would be good enough by itself, with its many different targets whizzing by, but there is also a skeet shoot and a quick-draw contest that should you turn you into the Fastest Mouse in the West. Get past those, and you face a shoot-out with the bad guys, but don't shoot any innocent bystanders! VGA and a mouse are required. [SPACEKL] SpaceKill I (Neurosport; $15) is a space battle game in which you must maneuver through asteroids and mine fields, defend your docking station as well as your ship, and fight the enemies ships. The object is to protect your missile silos from enemy bombs. There are five levels of action, each a bit more difficult than the last. Requires 286 or 386 with EGA or VGA. [STARFIRE] Starfire 1.4 (Silver Lightening Software; $20) is an action-packed shoot-em-up space game. An invasion fleet is headed towards the Earth. The more points you amass, the faster the action gets. If Sadamm's smiling face appears you can blow him away for extra points. This game requires a mouse, and has excellent EGA/VGA graphics, but also supports CGA. -----Falling Block Games These games are often referred to as "Tetris" type games, but Tetris was not the first game of this type (see "Beyond Columns"), so we call them "Falling Block Games". [BEYOND] Beyond Columns 1.1 (Taylor, Brad P.; $0) "...is like Tetris, only different." That's what our write-up of this program would have been before reading the background given by the author, who says: "The original Columns game was invented for the X window system by Jay Geertsen of HP" before Tetris came along. In this game, you control columns as they move down the screen, much like with Tetris. However, each column is composed of three different blocks and you make the columns dissolve by getting three blocks of the same color or design (your choice of several block designs is given) in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. To further complicate things, you can rearrange the blocks within the columns so that, for example, if a column on the bottom has two green blocks on top and the falling column has a green block in the middle, say, you can rotate the middle green block to the bottom of the column so that when it lands on the column with the two green blocks, there will be three green blocks in a row, causing them to dissolve. In our opinion, this program is a lot more difficult than Tetris. The Easy level drove us to a nervous breakdown. The bad news: it is for VGA or MVGA only, and it appears that you have to reboot to get out of the program. [BRIX_EM] Brix I (Epic MegaGames ASP; $34) is a falling-block game with a lot of features: lasers, elevators, lava, anti-gravity, and more. There are 112 levels to challenge you. The game features superb VGA graphics and animation, Sound Blaster music and digital sound. Requires VGA, 286 or better, 512K RAM, and a hard disk. [BRIX] Brix 2.0 (Dlugosz Software; $5) is an impressive falling-block game. As you progress to higher levels, the game speed increases, the playing field becomes smaller, and the puzzle shapes become more complicated. Other features include solo play or head-to-head competition, four difficulty levels ranging from easy to impossible, and more. A sliding tile puzzle game is also included. EGA/VGA required. [COLORJB] Colors 1.1 (BONCZYK, JIM; $?) has many new strategies. Requires VGA. [CUBER] Cuber 2.0 (Soleau, William; $12) is a challenging variation of the falling block game. [DBLOCK] Double Blocks (Yale, Ernest Yale; $5) is a falling block game for one or two players. The program is well designed, colorful, and has good sound effects which can be turned off. Because it uses ASCII characters for graphics, it will work with any type of video. (The author can no longer be reached at the address listed in the documentation.) [DOUBLNK] Double Link (Tupaczewski, Paul; $15) is a very addictive falling-block game. An oblong shape, which is actually two round units linked together, is dropped down the chute. Sometimes they are the same color, but often they are not. When four units of the same color are aligned together vertically or horizontally, they disappear and the other units in the links are left behind. If a unit left behind was being held aloft by its partner, it drops when the partner is removed. This can set up a chain reaction as a unit drops to form a group with three matching units below it. Each level starts with more and more Meanies (units with faces) in the chute. Once all of the Meanies are removed by grouping matching colors with them, the level is over. [EGAINT] EgaInt 0.94.12 (Ng, Eric; $0) is a falling block game. Several options are available such as a tournament mode, your choice of control keys and block styles, and eleven levels of play. Requires EGA/VGA. [MULTIX] Multix (Blackstone Software; $10) is an interesting and challenging falling-block game. The falling pieces are very irregularly shaped, so placing them is very challenging. You can "crunch" a portion on the piece to make it fit better, but this will subtract from your score. Requires EGA. [NYET] Tommy's Nyet 04.29.90 (Tommy's Toys; $?) is a basic falling-block game. [NYET3] Nyet III [PROLINE Software; $40] is a super falling-block type game with many innovative features. There are many different variations of the game, such as one in which blocks that have already come down partially melt away and the next in which appendages suddenly appear. You have to win "money" on the lower levels with which to buy tools for taking on the higher levels. The program features great graphics, sounds, and opening animation. Requires VGA, hard disk, 286+. [ROPO] Rodeo Poker 1.0 (Herring, Steve; $8) is a western-style falling-block game. Instead of falling blocks, this game uses playing cards that drop down four chutes for you arrange into groups of five to make winning poker hands. You can jump a card from one chute to another. The better the hand the bigger the score. [STT] Shift Tac Toe (Hanchin, Len; $10) is a falling block type game in which you must shift the colors of three vertical blocks as they fall so that they will match up with other blocks of the same color. It starts off easy, but the action gets faster, the longer you go. [TEAMTRS] Teamtris (Cinetic Systems; $0) is a falling-block game that lets you play against a human opponent, as well as playing solo. You can choose between two board sizes. VGA required. [TEXTRIS] Textris 2.0 (Hanlin, Thomas G. III; $12) is a falling-block game that makes you spell words as the letterblocks fall. If you like Tetris type games and you like word games, we guarantee that you will love Textris. Words can be made horizontally or vertically and must be from 3-7 letters long. When the letterblocks form a word, they are highlighted for a moment and then removed. The blocks above those being removed move down a row and if any new words are formed as a result, they are removed too. Points are awarded according to the difficulty of the words spelled. A game like this requires a good dictionary built in for determining when a word has been spelled. If it has a poor or limited dictionary, you will be frustrated by its rejecting words that you know are good. We were very satisfied with Textris' dictionary. Requires EGA/VGA. [TOWERS] Towers (Cascoly Software ASP; $24) The object is to build a tower one level at a time with falling blocks of various sizes. You need quick reflexes to be able to fit the blocks in the tightest pattern. There are detailed 3-D perspective graphics that change as you scroll the screen. Requires EGA/VGA and a mouse. [VALGUS] Valgus Squared (Glenn, James R. Jr.; $10) is a falling-block game with pieces moving in from all four sides. The object is to complete squares around the block in the middle. Since you never know what direction the next piece will be coming from, you do not have long to react, making this a very challenging game. [XTETRIS] xTetris 2.0 (Singer, Daniel; $0) is a falling-block game which includes triangular shapes as well as rectangles. [XXIV] XXIV (Ambachtsheer, Mark; $10) is a falling-block type math game. Sets of three numbers fall and the object is to get numbers to multiply together to equal 24, horizontally or vertically. Three levels of difficulty keep you on your toes. -----Street Fighting Games: [HORROR] EndLess Horror (JMS Enterprises; $10) is a parody of the Street Fighter arcade type game. All the ozone has burned up and you must fight off the evil Froggers. [EXECUTE] Executioners (Bloodlust Software; $35) is an intense fighting game for 1 or 2 players. It features a total of eight fighting moves, and machine guns, and a variety of strange super-villians. It also features music and digitized sounds effects. Requires VGA and 386+ with at least 1 meg of expanded memory. [KUNGFU] Kung Fu Louie (Salgado, R.; $30) is an arcade game in which you, as Kung Fu Louie, must fight the "evil" martial artists. This is a MAJOR programming effort covering three disks. The documentation lists a dozen people as co-authors. The program requires a 286 or 386 computer with EGA compatible video to keep the realistic karate graphics moving smoothly and quickly. The AdLib music card is supported, but if you don't have one, you will still get a musical soundtrack on the PC's speaker. A couple of the authors are karate students, and it shows in the graphics and play of the game. A front punch does the least damage, but can be thrown the fastest. A back spinning hook kick to the head is the most damaging blow, but is so slow it is easily avoided or countered by a faster technique. Two other techniques, a front snapkick to the body and a roundhouse kick to the head, do medium damage at medium speed. There are four different scenes, and you have to defeat several "bad guys" at each location, and of course, the competition keeps getting tougher. The scenery is very impressive. -----Artillery, Tank & Missile Games: [BATALIA] Batalia is a two-player game in which you and your opponent each have a space ship and the object is to be the first to shoot the other a total of ten times. Barriers, etc, are placed on the screen for you to hide behind and maneuver around. The screen changes after each hit. [BOMBAWA] BombAway 1.2 (Delaroderie, Rad; $10) combines two popular programs EGABomb and VGABomb. It is a high-resolution, mouse-supported (not required) graphics game in which two players fire artillery shells at each other under a moonlit star-filled night sky. EGA/VGA required. [GROUNDWR] Ground War (Enque Software; $10) is a two-player multi-tank game, that involves both hand-eye coordination and strategy. One player takes the position of the Allies, while the other takes the position of the Iraqis in controlling eight tanks each around ammo dumps, fuel tanks, bunkers and mine fields. Requires EGA/VGA. [GRAVWAR] Gravity Wars (Ismail-Beigi, Sohrab; $0) is an interesting variation of the old two-player, tank aim-and-shoot type game. Instead of tanks, you have space ships, and the gravity of nearby planets and stars affect your shots. For each game, you can toggle through randomly drawn star systems to find one that looks particularly interesting and challenging. VGA required. [HAVOC] Electron Havoc 1.1 (Shramko, John; $10) lets you and an opponent take turns firing at each other's space ships. You must adjust your firing speed and ship location to allow for gravity pockets. Requires VGA and a mouse. [NITEFIRE] Nitefire is a two-player tank game. You take turns moving or shooting. Before shooting, you can adjust the angle and velocity. The first one to hit the other wins. [PATRIOT] Patriot 1.1.1 (Jaeger, Bruce; $0) is a tough VGA arcade game in which you must guide Patriot missiles against Scud missiles. A mouse is required. [SANDSTRM] Sand Storm 2.1 (Johndrow, David A. ASP; $23) is a missile war game based on Desert Storm. You must defend cities, oil wells and barracks from scuds and jet attacks with your Patriot missiles. Then guide your Tomahawk missile through anti-aircraft fire to knock out enemy weapons plants and mobile scud launchers. The game includes 20 missions and a Gulf war map. Requires EGA/VGA, mouse and 384K RAM. [SCORCH] Scorched Earth 1.2 (Hicken, Wendell; $10-$20) is a thrilling artillery game for VGA. If features colorful graphics and allows up to 10 players. You can use a mouse, joystick, or keyboard. One player can compete against computerized players or mix computerized and human players. [SCUDATK] Scud Atak2 (Peterson, David Lee; $5) is a missile-attack type game. Features include excellent VGA graphics, a synthesizer music soundtrack and digitized sound effects and speech (with sound cards), and joystick and mouse support. With multiple missiles and aircraft, this is a very challenging and enjoyable game. [STORM1] Space Chase I: City Under Siege (Safari Software Productions; $19-$34) Jason Storm battles the forces of evil for control of a vast city. Features 10 levels of play, excellent EGA/VGA graphics, and original Adlib/SB music tracks. Requires 286-16+, 530K RAM (580K and sound card for music), EGA/VGA and 2MB of disk space. [TANK] Tank is a two-player tank game, or you can play the computer. Unlike NiteFire, you don't take turns. Firing, adjustment of angle and velocity, shields, movement, all take place constantly by both sides. Slow-down required. [TANKWARS] Tank Wars (Morse, Kenny; $10) is not your typical aim-and-shoot tank game. It looks like the old VGA-Bomb on the surface, but one major difference is the variety of weapons from which to choose. Another interesting difference is the choice of six opponent types, and the attackee has defensive options. VGA is required, and a mouse is optional. [TVBOMB] TV Guided Bombs (VTS; $3-$13) is a game in which you must guide a camera equipped bomb down the air shaft of the bunker. [VGABOMB] VGABomb 1.0 (Delaroderie, Rad; $5) is an artillery combat game. -----Snake Type Games [ASP] ASP Attack Plus 2.0 (The Hodges Enterprise; $10) is patterned after the old snake games which were among the first games available for the PC. In the game, you guide the snake around gobbling up food as it appears. The snake grows longer with each bite, however, and if you run into yourself or a wall, it's off to snake heaven. What makes ASP different is that the better you do, the more walls start sprouting up. If that isn't challenging enough, you can choose to steer the snake with only left and right turns from the snake's perspective, as opposed to using the four arrow keys which always result in movement in the arrow's direction. [EGASNAKE] EGASnake 1.0 (Hulthin, Michael; $10) is an EGA version of the old Snake game. It has realistic looking rats for the snake to eat, adjustable speeds, and multiple board layouts. [Reflex] Reflex (3F Productions; $15) is a "snake" type game. The object is to move your worm through many levels, collecting points by eating and avoiding your enemies. Good graphics and color. [SLITHER] Slither (Jamison, Brian; $10) is a variation on the old classic Snake game. You must try to eat rats and other cretures without running into the walls or yourself. Features include two-player games, Sound Blaster support, and more. You can also play against the computer. [SNAKE] Snake (Lorati, Roger; $5) is another variation of the old Snake game in which you must guide the constantly growing snake around the screen to eat the pellets without running into itself or other obstacles. There are a couple of interesting twists to this one. [SQUIRM] Squirmer 1.30C (SQUIRM) (Parker, Stephen L.; $10) is a sophisticated variation of the old Snake type game in which the ever-lengthening worm must maneuver around to swallow stuff while avoiding running into things. Transporters take you to different levels, and eating a clock gives you more time. Eating dynamite sticks will cause part of the worm to explode, making it easier to maneuver, but if the worm is not long enough, it may all explode and you die. [TROFF] Troff (Soumarokov, N.; $10) is a game that combines the old "Snake" type game with the old "Blockade/Tron" type game to come up with a tough new challenge. You must race the computer's snake to get to the randomly appearing "pellets", and at the same time try to make the computer's snake run into your snake, a wall or itself while avoiding having the computer's snake do the same to you. There are four levels of randomly moving walls. Pascal source code is included. Requires a 286 machine, EGA and DOS 3.3+. The game is well designed, challenging and fun to play. (The author is a 17 year-old Soviet citizen living in Vienna, Austria.) [VENDETA] Vendetta 1.0 (Elder, Steven; $10) The object of the game is to shoot the bad guys that are hiding around town. You have to scroll the screen to see the whole town, and you have to be fast to get the bad guys before they get you. Requires 640K RAM, VGA, and a mouse. -----Virtual Reality Games: The following games were created by "virtual reality" game creation programs. The graphics and play are not as good as arcade games written with regular programming languages, but are worth a look. [MODSS] Menace of Dr. Spoil Sport (Leithauser, David; $5-$10) you need to get to Dr. Spoil Sport's space station above the earth, disable the weapons before he blasts the earth with a super laser, and avoid all the traps and robot guards. VGA required. [ZAPPER1, ZAPPER2] Zapper in Neverwhere 1.0 (Acord Games; $20) In this 3-D, scrolling, virtual reality type game, a freak lightening bolt draws you into an alternate dimension inside your computer. The denizens of this strange universe offer to help you return to Earth if you help them defeat their ancient enemies the Zargons. The bizarre landscape is peopled with strange pyramid-shaped beings who provide you with clues and teleport you to other areas in your quest to escape. Features include SoundBlaster-compatible sound effects and music. VGA required. [ZAPPER4] Zapper 4 Lost In Zapperstein (Acord Games; $20) is an action/arcade in which you return to Neverwhere to save the Zargons from an evil ruler. The Zargons are being held captive in Neverwhere's capital city of Zapperstein. You must not only save the Zargons, but still escape safely from the bizarre world inside the computer. Features scrolling screens and sound effects. [ZAPMAN] Zapman 1 The Fantastic Zapman (Acord Games; $20) you must help free Zapman from evil aliens. You run, jump and shoot your way to freedom through 20 levels of aliens and hazards. Features scrolling screens and sound effects. Requires VGA and a hard disk. [ZOOSE] Zoose 1 - Zapped by the Light! (Acord Games; $20) You play the role of superhero, Captain Zoose, who explores strange worlds and fights to save humankind from space invaders. Features scrolling screens and sound effects. [CAPNZAPN] Capn Zapn 1 Kozmik Journeys (Acord Games; $20) You are a space explorer who journeys to other planets collecting treasures and fighting monsters. Features 20 levels of bizarre worlds, animated adversaries, scrolling screens and sound effects. Requires VGA and a hard disk. -----Breakout Games This should be considered a subset of "Classic Games", since Breakout games were among the original arcade games -- not very far removed from the very first arcade game, Pong. [ARKEGA] Ark (DeMers, Scott; $0) is a breakout game with an interesting feature - the files that define the different playing screens can be edited with a text editor, allowing you to easily create customized playing fields. You could make a whole set of screens for special promotions or events, for example, limited only by your imagination. [BANANOI] Bananoid (Rieder, William; $0) is the best breakout type game we have ever seen on a PC. It requires VGA or MCGA, a mouse, and at least a 286-10. The graphics are beautiful. One unusual feature is that the playing field is two screens wide and scrolls smoothly as you move the mouse. Another unusual feature (for a breakout game) is that every once in a while, one of the colored blocks that you are breaking out falls down the screen and if you catch it with the paddle, it changes the paddle (to narrower, double-wide, or "sticky"), or it changes the paddle to a ship which can fire laser blasts at the remaining blocks (while the ball is still bouncing around, of course), or it advances you to the next screen. Which of these happens depends on the color of the block. [BREAKOU] Breakout (Strausberg, Hal; $0) is a new version of the old Breakout type of game. It requires an EGA or better. [BRICK] Brick (Bly, Vincent; $0) is a Break-Out type game. [BROKOUT] Brokeout 1.1 (Cox, Doug; $0) is a no-frills breakout game that requires a mouse and VGA. [DRAGNFW] Dragon (Willshaw, F. A.; $?) is a game like Breakout, but with a lot of twists. [POPCORN] PopCorn (Lacaze, M.; $0) is a fantastic breakout game with all kinds of special effects. There are two problems: the documentation is in French, and the game plays at a speed about ten times that of the surrounding graphics. See the write-up of this program in the REVIEWS directory (GA_03) for tips on running this program. [SBLAST] Moraff's Super Blast I (Moraff, Steve; $0) is an advanced breakout type game. There are multiple screens with lots of surprises, including sticky paddles, multi-balls, and much more. Some of the screens require a lot of patience to master, but getting there is half the fun. Virtually all video systems are supported, from CGA to Super-VGA. A joystick is supported on AT's. -----"Pipe" Games: In these games, you have a limited amount of time to lay pipes (or paths, etc.) which pop up in random configurations. The object is to lay the longest continuous path possible. [LAVACAP] Lava Cap (Soleau, William; $15) is a variation of Soleau's popular Oilcap game, but with many enhanced features. It seems much harder to us. If you are not familiar with this type of game: the scenario is that a volcano is getting ready to erupt, and you must lay pipes, which come in different configurations, to direct the flow of lava. The longer the uninterrupted path you are able to create, the higher your score. You must reach certain point totals to continue to advance to each of the 20 levels. EGA/VGA and a mouse are required. [OILCAP] OilCap (Soleau, William; $12) is similar to the game Pipe Dream. You must place pipe links to contain the flow of oil before it reaches a dead end. You can optionally speed up the flow of oil after you have placed all your links down. EGA/VGA and a mouse are required. [MAINBRK] MainBreak 4.0 (Soleau, William; $?) - connect the water pipes. [RUNOFF] Runoff 2.0 (Soleau, William; $14) - 50 challenging levels. The game requires EGA/VGA and a mouse. [UPWALL] Up the Wall (Soleau, William; $10) [WALLPIPE] Wall Pipe 1.0 (William Soleau; $12) is a sequel Oilcap (above). It pits you against the clock as you try to keep water flowing from a well by creating a series of pipe links to control its flow. We suspect that the key selection was based on a standard keyboard rather than the 101-key keyboard. EGA required. We have also included in this archive a patch (by John Deurbrouck) that will increase the maximum number of ships from three to thousands, so that you can get more practice. It will also create a new EGAroid file that allows only one ship, for when you are ready to really prove your skills. The object is to make "Bert" jump from one tile to another causing tiles to change color. After changing all tiles, you move on to the next level. [ROUND42] Round42 is a space invaders game with 42 rounds of different aliens to zap. This is definitely at the top of the heap of space invader type games. A slow-down utility may be needed. [SPACINV] SpaceInv is an arcade "Space Invaders" type of game. [XONIX] Xonix is a simple game that is fun. Use the cursor keys to dart across the box holding the bouncing "whatevers" without them hitting your path. Use your Photon torpedoes or phasers to reduce its shield energy. A hit with no shields will destroy the ship. [TURBODR] Turbo (Ross, Doug; $5) is a race car game. While this has none of the action and extensive graphics of retail games like Grand Prix Circuit, is still has some entertainment value. [FANS] Fans (Mettus Graphics; $0) is an arcade game of the shoot-em-up genre, but with some strange twists to it. Fans has good graphics, for which EGA video is required, but the play is a little weak, in our opinion. [FLEES] Space Flees (Independent Software Group, Inc.; $0) is an action arcade game. EGA/VGA required. The key assignments assume an AT-style keyboard and do not work well on a 101-key keyboard. [MOTORMA] Motor Mania (Hewitt, Eric; $11) is high speed motorbike game in which you race through a series of jumps. This is similar to the arcade Excitebike. An occasional cloud washes away a section of street you have painted and the area must be repainted. When you've completely painted the town, you advance a level and begin again. Requires 512K RAM and EGA/VGA. [MPINBALL] Moraff's Pinball 5 (Moraff, Steve; $0) is a pinball game for EGA/VGA. It supports VGA in its high-res, 640x480, 16-color mode. Unlike the old pinball games that have been around for years, this one will run at the correct speed on any CPU, from an 8088 to a 486. [RACE] Race (Erikson, Carl; $5-$15) is a game of miniature car racing. The cars can accelerate, decelerate, or turn through the race courses while many obstacles block their progress including walls, slopes, gates, tornadoes, and gas slicks. The more tracks a car successfully completes, the better the car becomes in areas such as acceleration, speed, traction, and helicopter speed. Also, Race! lets the user design his own race tracks on which the cars compete. CGA compatible video is required and an EGA version is provided. The game is fun and challenging. [RAMPCUB] Rampcube 1.0 (Soleau, William; $12) calls for a good eye and fast reflexes. This is another challenging, high-quality game from Soleau. You have to catch colored tiles as they slide off of a ramp and arrange them into cubes in the grid below. If you do not catch one in time, it will fall into the slot below it, probably messing up your cubes. EGA/VGA required. [SFLY] SuperFly 2.0 (Anderson, Nels ASP; $17-$19) Armed only with a fly swatter, you must swat flies, roaches and spiders while avoiding being trapped by them. The goal is to swat the Super Fly itself, and each round presents different obstacles that make it increasingly difficult to end the insect menace. EGA or VGA required.
