WP-01: Word Processing Programs ------------------ #1326 Text Editors Small Programs Disk ------------------ CSE 1.70 (IBM Version) Applegate, J. R. $0 is a text editor that lets you assign editing and program function commands to any key. Up to five different files can be held in memory at the same time and text transferred between them. Although these features are often found only in large text editors, CSE takes only 12k of disk space. The look of CSE is somewhat similar to Kedit, Personal Editor and other popular editors, making it a good small substitute for those larger editors when disk space is at a premium. Edit Fox, John D. $0 is a fast and easy full screen editor. Features include wordwrap, paragraph reformat, find and replace, delete word, delete line, undo most recent deletion, cut and paste, enter character as ASCII, load text block from disk, write text block to disk, and only takes 18k of disk space. EDIT is meant for little jobs but will handle files over 100k (limited by memory). Encrypted Journal 1.0 (EJ) Sitting Duck Software $10 is a text editor that automatically encrypts your file when saving and decrypts it when loading. This is an interesting concept, although the editor itself is very crude and limited to eight pages of text. Nevertheless, this could be handy for certain types of small files, such as a list of credit card numbers, your love letters, resume, etc., which you should encrypt (as we frequently urge in PSL NEWS), but probably never do. Sled and Slhed Wilmott, Sam $15 are small, fast text editors. They can read and write a variety of file formats and are useful as file conversion utilities. Many files can be edited at once, limited only by available memory. There are two versions of the editor: SLED, for monochrome and color monitors running in text mode, and SLHED, that takes advantage of the 90 columns and 43 lines of text available using the graphics mode of the Hercules Graphics adapter. Text Editor 2.5 (TEXTED) Haluska, John $0 is a public domain, full-screen ASCII text editor which uses commands similar to those used in WordStar and Sidekick. You can easily create/edit batch files, generate forms, and edit files captured by telecommunications programs. You can edit files as large as available memory, and pop-up help is available. Other features include word wrap, DOS shelling, insert, delete, split, join, block commands, and more. You can print a file/block to LPT1-LPT3, enter any ASCII code, find/replace a phrase, and set left/right margins and page length. VI 1.9a Nim, Sue Doe $0 is a screen text editor. It has been given the same name as the screen editor for the Berkeley Unix operating system. This is no coincidence: with a few exceptions, this editor is a subset of the latter. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1326 -------------------------------- --------------------- #3714 Text Editors #2 Small Programs Disk --------------------- Easiest Editor 2.4 (EEDIT) Kihlken, Tom $20 is a fast and easy text editor that lets you edit multiple files, including cut-and-paste between files, search and replace, undo mistakes, access DOS, and more. It is written in assembler (source not included) and it can run under Windows and Desqview. It also has support for MS compatible mice and the ability to run in a small window in DESQview. It is not as powerful as Qedit (2-WP-1006) nor a pop-up like My-Desk (2-UT-1406), but it crams a lot of functionality into a small (19k) package. ED (ED-DC) Coon, Don $0 is a tiny editor that contains most features needed to write letters, doc files etc. It will allow you to cut and paste, load, save and print most files. At only 2k in size, ED is ideal for use with laptops and RAM disks. Editing Tools 2.2 (ET) Jou, Jiann Ph.D. $25 is a full-screen multifile text editor with a multidirectory DOS shell. With the editor, you can easily edit multiple files. The DOS Shell, on the other hand, is an intelligent interface between DOS and the text editor. With it you may change drive or directory, execute a DOS command, or select a file to edit, or a program to execute without worrying about paths. Easy Write 1.2 (EW) Lachance, Guy and Roper, Tee and Babcock, Chris $0 is a public domain text editor with Pascal source code. fastword GOLD 2.0 (FASTWRD) jwh: SoftWare ASP $24 is a very attractive DOS text/batch file editor. Other features include cut and paste operations, printing of all or a portion of a file, execution of DOS or batch files from within the editor, and more. Requires 512K. NanoEdit 1.5 (NANOEDT) Doxa, Christo Pasa $25 is a very small, fast, no-frills text editor. In our article on DOS 5, this is the kind of program we suggested that Microsoft should have used in place of their 250k editor. PED 3.0 Pliable Products $23 is an easy-to-use text editor that can handle files of up to 8 meg. Global search and replace allows you to replace words in files without having to load, edit and save them manually. Works in EGA 35 and 43 line modes. TinyWord 2.0 (TINYWRD) Loys Software Development $1 is a text file editor requiring just 6k, making it ideal for laptops, etc. It provides a full range of capabilities while at the same time being fast and very easy to use. Some features include full cursor controls, on-screen help, block commands, search and replace, auto-indent, and WordStar compatibility. Limitations are that lines can only be up to 80 characters long and that you must have enough free space on disk before saving or the changes will be lost, although the last version of the file should still be saved in a BAK file. The editor is accompanied by another tiny program, an 8k text file printing utility that will let you control the left margin and the number of lines per page, will let you add page numbers, and will optionally double-space text. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #3714 -------------------------------- --------------------------------- #0299 Word Processing Programs #1 Small Programs Disk --------------------------------- Eded Gillott, E. It includes features such as search and replace, block operations, several internal help screens, printer support, text enhancements, paragraph reformat, and standard movement keys. Although the author says the program was written for children, there is nothing overtly childish about it (unlike a similar program, "Word Processing for Kids"), and it should be of interest to vision impaired users as well. FSed Daetwyler, D. W. $35 is primarily a programming development tool for the applications or systems programmer. FSedit is a text editor that the author wrote using an article from the January 1983 issue of Microcomputing. RV-Edit is a full screen editor written in BASIC. It has many of the powerful commands of regular text editors, such as block copy and moves, windows for editing two files at once, search and replace, automatic word wrap, and much more. Bedit is not just for vision-impaired users, however. It is also useful for laptop users who have trouble seeing the screen. With CGA-compatible video, you can toggle four different print sizes from normal up to large block characters that each take up 4 standard rows and 8 standard columns. The characters in the largest size (pictured) are formed with blocks from the IBM extended character set. They will work with any kind of monitor. The next two smaller sizes are created with graphics, so they are smoother, but require CGA-compatible video. The largest size only allows a few characters on the screen at one time, but the horizontal scrolling is so fast and smooth that writing lines longer than the screen display is no problem. In fact, the fast screen scrolling makes this a good choice as a large-character file reader even if you do not need the editing features. The program includes a 12-bit font to give 53 and 58 character lines on supporting hardware. 640x350 mode is supported on EGA monitors, and over 50 WordStar-type commands are included. It requires only 256k RAM and one disk drive (hence the "laptop" in the name). H-Key Fried, Robin $? #625 is a word processing program intended to be used by people of average or better intelligence who have poor or no control over hand and finger movement. The program works by displaying a matrix of letters, numbers, cursor control words, or program commands on the screen. A cursor moves repeatedly down the screen until a key is pressed to select a row, then the cursor moves across the screen until a key is pressed again to select a letter (or whatever) on that row. The letter is added to the body of text displayed on a part of the screen. This all works much easier than it is to describe and seems like it could be a real boon to people with restricted movement. Hebrew Edit 1.0 Right to Left Software ASP $19 #4967 is a Hebrew text editor. It supports Hebrew vowels (Nikud), script and block letters. Datalight C under MSDOS is fully supported as well. MindReader Brown Bag Software $95 #1581 is an interesting text editor with Address Book, Glossary and Calculator. It is unique in that it uses a patented artificial intelligence-based engine to learn the way you write and who you write to. The more you use the program, the smarter it will get. The program suggests words and phrases as you type. Even before a word is actually completed. The idea was to enable busy professionals, to create or modify a document and produce final copy without having to use a secretary. We see MindReader as being of benefit primarily to those who cannot type by touch. (Note: Brown Bag does not allow the latest versions of their programs to be distributed as shareware. The registration fee shown is for the latest version.) NJStar Japanese Wordprocessor 2.1j Ni, Hongbo $54 #20043/4715 [3 disks] is a full featured Japanese word processor. Those who have seen PCW get bigger than they needed will be happy to see a trimmed down version of an old favorite. This is not to say that PCW-Lite is some trivial or crippled program. It has just been refined to provide a fast and easier to use word processor without all the advanced formatting features of PCW. Support is provided for Cyrillic, the Russian character set. Character set customization is also provided. PC-Write Standard Level 2.02 Quicksoft, Inc. ASP $59 #27565/3777 [4 disks] is a highly adaptable word processor. A chart is available for each language configuration, showing corresponding English characters. This is a full-featured word processor, supporting word wrap, block text commands, search and replace, text formatting, and more. KwikWrite Elliott, Alan C. ASP $39 #2839 is a word processor that saves files in straight ASCII, so while it can be used for letters and such, it can also be used for applications that need files with no word processing control codes in them, such as Email, programming, batch files, etc. The feature that differentiates a "word processor" from a simple text editor is generally the ability to have extensive control over printed output, such as the use of italics, bold print, justified text, etc. Most word processors do this by inserting non-text control codes in the file, making the files unusable for applications that require straight text files. KW compromises by using text codes in the document to control the printer. If you already have a favorite text editor, you can achieve this same result with a utility such as PrintSelector (see the Printing section). KW will also do mail-merge with dBase III compatible data files. Requires two floppies or a hard disk and 360K RAM. LTE 1.8 [LTE] Anderson, Richard $10 #4972 (11-93 CD) combines the capabilities of a word processor, an editor, and a page publisher. RGB TechWriter Basore, Paul A. $20 #1007 can be used as a normal word processor. Written in assembler, it is very fast while still being easy to learn and use. But it was primarily designed for scientific/technical writing which uses super- and subscripts for formulas, Greek or other special symbols. Unlike CHIWRITER which uses graphics to display these special cases, this program uses different colors of text to indicate them, which is much faster. So if you want to be able to type at top speed and you want a word processor that you will be comfortable using for all of your word processing, you should try RGB-TechWriter first. However, while Chiwriter is limited in the number of printers it will support, RGB-TechWriter can drive any printer provided that it allows the computer to adjust the vertical distance skipped when a carriage return is encountered. (Chiwriter is no longer available as shareware.)
