Some have a message base or conferences devoted to desktop publishing. FindBBS Campbell, George $0 is a search routine which locates BBS phone numbers quickly and easily. A large list of U.S. BBS's is included. MedBBS is a list of medical, fire/EMS, science, alcohol, AIDS and disability related bulletin board systems. MedLegal $0 is a current listing of 49 BBS's that specialize in medical or legal areas. PCPBBS SEAboard $0 contains a list of over 1800 BBS's which are accessible via PC Pursuit. Over 500K of disk space is required for this extensive text file. BBSXpress Levin, Richard B. $50 #27461/1471 [2 disks] is a full-featured bulletin board system offering most, if not all, of the popular features demanded by callers and sysops. There are no limits on the number of conferences, file areas, protocols, bulletins, questionnaires, or message sizes. System maintenance is fully automated, removing most of the drudgery of running a BBS. The author claims that even if you have never run a BBS before, you will probably have BBSXpress up and running in 90 minutes or less. A hard disk and DOS 3+ are required. EIS BBS Langseth, Justin, ASP $119 #1767 is an electronic mail and bulletin board system that is highly configurable. EIS will run external programs written for RBBS and other popular bbs's. Transfer protocols include Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem-G, Zmodem, and Xmodem CRC. All of the internal databases are in Paradox Table format. Other features include an ANSI editor, the ability to download files in batches using a protocol like Zmodem or Ymodem-Batch, a message base packing program, and a MegaMail off-line message reader. It is easy to set up and run. Free Speech Pinnacle Software $25 #2570 is a BBS providing a very streamlined conversation system. It can operate as a stand-alone BBS, an announcer board, a door, a front-end to other BBS's, a modem-handler for doors, or as a night-time alternate. It can read and write public text, and write private text for system operator. Magpie Manes, Steve $75 #1315 The author claims that this is "probably the most full-featured BBS package ever written for microcomputer." It employs a tree-structured message base. The author also warns: "Magpie is a complex program and, as such, requires folks willing to make an effort at learning it. Fortunately, it is not beyond the capacity of most people to learn." Magpie requires a hard disk. It has been successfully tested on XT's, AT's and 386's. It supports up to 9600 baud. Maximus-CBCS Dudley, Scott J. $110 #27437/3039 [5 disks] is a multi-line BBS for DOS and OS/2. It is compatible with Opus 1.03 and has an extensive list of features, including a very sophisticated messaging system. It can directly display the contents of several types of archives, including ZIP, ARC, PAK and LZH. It supports Avatar graphics. It will automatically translate IBM line-drawing characters to normal ASCII. It supports a lightning-fast local video mode, which is aware of DoubleDOS, DESQview, and TopView. With all these features, Maximus still uses only 146K of RAM. The source code is available on disk #27438/3040 [2 disks]. MaxiHost Mankin, Don, ASP $25-$50 #27023/2331 is a personal BBS for people who want to be able to call their own system or let a friend call it and download a few files. MaxiHost has the following enhancements over MiniHost: improved Message System database, Message System printing, support for 9600 and 19200 bps modems, support for Multi-taskers, Event Scheduling, Questionnaire facility, Operator Chat hours, Trap DOOR menuing system, Menu driven DIRECTORY changes, supports up to fifteen external file transfer protocols, releases all but 25k of memory when in a door or in a DOS shell, program description updates in any directory, data files may be in a separate directory, 25 character CONFERENCE descriptions, ANSI graphics new user, help, and goodbye screens, and more. A hard disk is recommended. Maxihost is easy to install. In fact, almost no installation is required. (We are not sure if there is still any need for the old Minihost.) You may have to edit a few lines in the configuration file if you use different subdirectory names than the ones suggested, but that is about it. We highly recommend Maxihost for people wanting a quick and easy bulletin board system. MiniHost Mankin, Don, ASP $? #27023/769 is a quick-and-easy bulletin board system for people who want to be able to call their own system or let a friend call it and download a few files. We have been slow adding this program because the top communications programs, such as Procomm and GT Powercomm, have host modes of their own, but we have gotten some requests for a simple stand-alone program such as this one. Christian Lucht, Feeding Hills, MA, reports that Minihost will not work with the modem on COM4. MegaHost 2.02B Mankin, Don, ASP $33-$63 #27023/4161 is a personal BBS system by the author of MiniHost and MaxiHost. Enhancements over those systems include support for 9600 and 19200 baud modems, support for multi-taskers, event scheduling, questionnaire, support for up to 15 external file transfer protocols, DOOR support, security system, message database system, and much more. Requires 384K RAM, DOS 3+ and high density floppy or hard disk. Phoenix The GeneSys Project, Inc. $60 #27422/0607 [2 disks] is a bulletin board program that was previously known as Collie and Colossus. Bugs in those versions have been fixed and new features added. DSZ, Zmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem-G are now supported. A new programmable menu system has been added. PICS (Pascal Integrated Communications System) Archambault, Les $0 #27423/1304 [2 disks] is a completely integrated message and file transfer system. PICS is a complete BBS and file exchange system that has total security, preventing callers getting to the operating system of your computer. The second disk contains the complete Turbo Pascal source code. PICS features include public and private messages in multiple areas, multiple file areas and libraries, a mode for chatting with the sysop, list names of other users on the system, and more. Postmaster BBS Levin, Richard B. $25-$75 #1310 is a full featured, maintenance free, multi-SIG, multi-LIB electronic mail and file transfer system. PM is also designed to automate maintenance and ease the sysop burden as much as possible. Postmaster's use of DOS's hierarchal directory format allows SysOps to create varied and unusual BBS environments. A Postmaster SysOp in Florida has structured his board to represent a small city, complete with a City Hall, Visitor's Center, shopping malls, and more. Pyroto Mountain Pinnacle Software $35 #1131 is another unusual comm program - a combination bbs system and dial-up fantasy role-playing game in which your callers battle for domination of a mystic mountain. This is a very popular game in Montreal, where Timothy Cambell of Pinnacle Software is located. If you haven't gotten bored with running an ordinary bbs, maybe it's time to fantasize. RBBS Mack, Martin, Goosens $0 #27022/0030 [3 disks] is a powerful, very popular bulletin board system. Its use is free and is supported by members of the Capital PC Users Group. It is frequently updated and enhanced. It offers support for the Comutalker and HearSay 1000 speech board so that a visually-impaired sysop can hear the activity occuring on the board. RyBBS 7.6 Ryco Company $75 #20088 [2 disks] is a menu-driven BBS and communications program. The BBS has a very flexible menu system. The comm portion of the program has help screens, auto-dial menu, function key assignments, upload and download, and script support. BBS feature include FidoNet and EMail compatibility, the ability to run most BBS Door programs, and immediate virus scanning of uploads. Sapphire 4.07 Pinnacle Software $45 #27717/1570 [2 disks] is a bulletin-board system touted as being maintenance-free and easy to set up and use. Along those lines, it is designed primarily for the non-expert who wants to set up a BBS and who have never run a BBS before. Requires 512k, two drives and a smart modem. Spitfire BBS Woltz, Mike $70-$75 #27333/2793 [2 disks] is a multi-node compatible bulletin board system package. It supports 14 external protocols. Configuration is simple, fast, and straightforward. The documentation alone is over 400K, so a hard disk is required. Sport 1.55 Satore Center Software $85 #27629/3989 [2 disks] is primarily designed to manage communications and automatic, as well as manual, transfer of information among members of a group at one or more locations. Features include unattended distribution of files/messages to one or more members, a terminal mode, the ability to route incoming mail to another location, remote control of systems, conferencing, and more. TPBCOM Schneider, Jon E. $? #1132 is a full-featured bulletin board system with the following features: multiple message areas, including support for Fido-Net and EchoMail areas; multiple file areas; the ability to 'Type' files on-line, including 'Squeezed' and individual LBR and ARC member files and to even transmit individual ARC and LBR member files; support for Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem Batch, Imodem, and Zmodem single file; and much more. Features include multinode support, multinode chat, Zmodem, full-screen editor, extensive netmail support, extensive door support, data compression on all messages, and archive testing. Requires 640K, a modem, and a hard disk. WildCat Mustang Software, Inc. $135-$505 #27286/0846 [2 disks] is a powerful, yet easy to set up and use electronic bulletin board system. Features include up to 18 levels of security, multiple security verification items, support of up to 19,200 baud, sophisticated messaging features (reply, forward, carbon copy and return receipt), and ANSI color and graphics. Built-in protocols include Xmodem, Ymodem (batch), Zmodem (batch), and Kermit. External protocols are supported. Since the documentation file is over 400k, it's safe to say that a hard disk is required. WWIV 4 Bell, Wayne $55 #1461 is a BBS program that offers several security access levels, ability to chat with the sysop, add or subtract time available on line, change security levels and produce reports on users (name, computer type, user i.d., birthdate, etc.). Many enhancements have been made to the features of the program, including several related to improved email options. Requires DOS 3+, 512k+, 10meg+ hard disk. XRS: eXpress Response System Ratledge, Mike, ASP $30-$40 #27520/3431 [3 disks] is an offline reader and editor for messages downloaded from a BBS. It supports both XRS MailBag format used on Fidonet and QWK format used on PCBoard and similar bulletin board systems. You can select, compress and download message topics or areas you are interested in. You can then read, reply and compose messages offline after logging off the BBS. The eXpress Conversion System provided, allows conversions to and from several different formats, including the QWK support. TodayBBS Conley, Michael $0 #1432 is designed for BBS greetings based on "this day in history." It greets your system callers with information about what has happened on this day in the past. It can also be used by anyone who just wants something interesting to read when they start up their computer each morning. Bay Street Bulls Peterson, Doug $20 #1473 is an interactive stock market simulation door for PCBoard 12+. Unlike similar simulations, prices of stock are directly influenced by buyer behavior, plus a degree of randomization and the "Daily News" files that are shown on-line. File Wish List Alien Vampire Computing $10 #1870 is a door that lets bbs users input information about what kinds of programs they would like to see. This program will work with Wildcat, PCBoard Ver. 12, and TAG. Doors are also available for Spitfire, and GAP. FMS Directory Control Martin, Ray $15 #1743 is for sysops of RBBS. It allows them to perform file maintenance. There is not much documentation available yet, but a sample database has been included. Powerboard BBS 1.25 NUIQ Software $99 #20272/12541 (3 Disks) (10-93 CD) is a BBS program that comes complete with upload virus scanner, archive viewer, powermail QWK mail door, ANSI/ASCII screen drawing program, newsletter creator, file and message area maintainance utilities. It supports CD-ROMS and LANs, works under DESQview, offers mouse support and more. ProDoor Smith, Samuel H. $30 #27146/2260 [3 disks] is a multi-protocol batch file transfer door with extended archive manipulation and message base access used with PCBoard communications program. It comes with complete source code. SI Droids Collins, Darwin $20 #1447 is a multi-player, partially-scripted, character-graphics adventure for BBS's. It features player-to-player mail, the formation of player teams, and unattended play via a Command SCRIPT during other players' turns. Your mission is to seek and destroy hostile Droids and Droid teams before they destroy you. Your Droid continues playing, even after your turn is over, whenever another player plays the game. SMLCall - $20 #1523 is a simple utility to help RBBS sysops (and remote co-sysops) do flexible analysis on their CALLERS file, and to output the Tables and Graphs to either a text file or insert it into their MESSAGES message base. It will also help do monthly maintenance on your CALLERS file. Also on this same disk is: SMLMess Collins, Darwin $20 #1523 allows sysops and callers to read all messages with a specified subject or containing specified text. You can add Public/Private messages in up to 119 Conferences; search through all messages based on numerous criteria categories; look for new mail for you in all conferences; extract messages onto a downloadable archived file; download messages and more. BBSTest Kloss, Jim $35 #1156 was designed to help you keep track of local BBS phone numbers. It has several nice features to help you keep an accurate list with a minimum of time and trouble. You can use the dialing directories of Qmodem or Procomm or a list of numbers (such as from disk 1-BB-707). BBSTEST can actually logon to most systems and capture the session to disk for later review. In addition, you can use BBSTEST to try and contact busy or no answer numbers for several days without losing your original verified list. BBSTEST even creates a summary log of important information about various BBS's according to your StarDial Baron, Vic, ASP $20 #2011 is an autodialer package for Starlink users. It allows you to maneuver through the Starlink system with a minimum of keystrokes and is much faster than using a script file. It has eight internal file transfer protocols including Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem-g, 1k-Xmodem, 1k-Xmodem-g, Kermit, and ASCII. Additionally, it will support three external protocol drivers, such as Jmodem, Zmodem, etc. or you could utilize one of the external shells such as BBPOWERn and access several more external protocols from within STARDIAL.
