Setting up Web and Email

Before you go online with Web or Email, you need to enter a few details about how you want to connect to the Internet.

The setup process consists of:

The steps below explain, in brief, how to set your machine up. You will find more comprehensive instructions in your User Guide.

To enter your details in the Control panel:

  1. Open the "Modems" section of the Control panel in the System screen.
  2. Choose the type of modem you use from the "Current modem" list. If your modem is not listed, select one your modem is compatible with, or see the User Guide for details of how to add a new modem to the list.
  3. Press "OK" to close the "Modems" section of the Control panel, then open the "Dialling" section.
  4. If the place you are dialling from requires a '9' to get an outside line, select "Office" in the "Current location" line. If you are dialling from a mobile telephone, select "Mobile". If you are dialling from a normal telephone with no special dialling requirements, select "Home". For information on adjusting the dialling settings, please see the User Guide.
  5. Press "OK" to close the "Dialling" section of the Control panel, then open the "Internet" section.
  6. Tap "New" to create a new Internet service, then tap "OK" to base the service on "Standard settings".
  7. Give the service an appropriate name, and in the "Standard dial-up number" line enter the telephone number you dial to access your service provider.
  8. Move to the "Account" page of the "New Internet service" dialog and remove the tick from "Manual login", then enter your Internet service Username and Password.
  9. If your Internet service provider requires you to specify your machine's IP address, or to specify the addresses of its DNS servers, do this on the "Addresses" page.
  10. Tap "Done" to save your Internet service settings.
To enter your mail account details in Email:
  1. Start the Email program.
  2. Select "Add new account|Email" on the "Tools" menu.
  3. Enter an account name, your name and your email address on the "Account" page.
  4. Enter your SMTP server (the server used when sending messages) on the "Outgoing" page.
  5. Move to the "Incoming" page and enter your server for receiving mail, your login name and the password for your mailbox.
  6. Tap "OK".
