PsiFS: Frequently Asked Questions

Early Archimedes Serial Ports

Why does PsiFS not work on early Archimedes?

Early Acorn Archimedes computers had faulty serial ports that required cables wired differently to operate correctly. The Acorn A-Link should work reliably with these machines, but the Psion 3-Link and simple RS-232 serial cable require an adaptor wired as follows:
Acorn Archimedes connector
(9 pin female)
Psion 3-Link or RS-232 serial cable
(9 pin male)
2 (RxD)2 (RxD)
3 (TxD)3 (TxD)
1 (DCD) + 4 (DTR)4 (DTR)
5 (GND)5 (GND)
8 (CTS)6 (DSR)
7 (RTS)7 (RTS)
6 (DSR)8 (CTS)

To summarise, pins 6 and 8 should be swapped, pins 1 and 4 should be joined at the Acorn Archimedes end, and pins 1 and 9 are not used. The Internal block driver should then be used rather than InternalPC.

This wiring is by Toby Smith and Jonathan Allin, but has not been tested. No resposibility is taken for any damage that may result from use of this information.
