-What is the difference between PPP and SLIP?

SLIP (Serial Line Internet protocol) also
allows computers direct dial up access to the
Internet. However, PPP is newer, faster and
considered more flexible and feature-laden
than SLIP.

-I am having problems with my Internet
software. Who do I call for support?

Obviously, CompuServe cannot be expected to
support all of the Internet software packages
available on the market. For problems with
your Internet access software, contact the
vendor of the particular software package. If
you have problems with the CompuServe
NetLauncher(tm), you can call CompuServe's
Customer Support desk or leave a message in
the Support Forum (GO NLSUPPORT).

You may contact Customer Support at
1-800-848-8990 or 614-457-8650 from 7:30am
thru Midnight EST. You may also leave a
message by using GO FEEDBACK.

-Can I use the CompuServe PPP gateway to
access USENET Newsgroups and

 electronic mail?

CompuServe is providing access to a news
server for use with the dial up PPP access.
This means that you have the freedom of using
the USENET newsreader software of your
choice, simply configure it to read from the
news.compuserve.com server. There are
currently no plans to support e-mail through
PPP. CompuServe members will continue to be
able to access their e-mail by logging onto
the Information Service.

-What do I need to use to browse the World
Wide Web?

FOR WINDOWS:

 1. CompuServe NetLauncher(tm) (GO
NETLAUNCHER to download it).

FOR MAC:

 1. Internet Access Software (NCSA Mosaic is
available online).

 2. MacTCP - included in Macintosh System 7.5

 3. MacPPP

FOR OS/2

 1. IBM's WebExplorer

It is recommend that when using World Wide
Web that you disable the loading of images,
unless you are accessing at 14400 baud. When
using the Spry Mosaic Web browser you can
choose the OPTIONS pull-down menu, and
unselect AUTOLOAD INLINE IMAGES.

-Are there any security concerns with using
PPP?

There is no additional risk in using
CompuServe's dial PPP service. Your computer
is not accessible to people on the Internet.
As always, we suggest that you follow
standard security measures with this, as well
as any other service, and do not send your
credit card or any other sensitive
information over the internet.

-Can I use the PPP connection to provide
information on the Internet?

With CompuServes dial PPP service, you are
assigned a dynamic IP address from a bank of
IP addresses available to CompuServe members.
This means your IP address will change each
time you establish a new PPP connection. In
order to provide information on the Internet
(i.e. run your own World Wide Web page), you
need a static (permanent) IP address.

-Can I use PPP over affiliate networks?

The dial PPP service should work over any
affiliate network if legal agreements allow.
