He occupies the ground floor and lets the rooms on the other floors to students. His cellar is full of expensive French wines. Christine, Rod's girlfriend lives in a bedsit. The building in which she lives is a modern high-rise block on the edge of town. She used to rent a basement flat and, as you can imagine there wasn't much of a view from her window. & Last summer Christine visited some penfriends in Poland. On a journey by train from the city of Gda¤sk to the town of Radom, she met some farmers' wives who invited her to stay at their village named Jaszczur˘wka, in Zakopane, near the Czech border . The highlight of her holiday was her visit to Krak˘w. She told her friends what a great centre of culture it was: the museums, churches and historical monuments were fascinating. & Rod and Maureen are planning a quiet holiday in East Anglia, where they'll be travelling on canals by barge. Having worked hard all year Rod and Christine are looking forward to a bit of relaxation All those green fields and quiet waterways will be a pleasant sight for them. Originally, they had intended to go on a windsurfing holiday, but when they went to the local store they were told by the shop assistant that there were no windsurf boards in stock and nobody knew when the next delivery would be because there was a strike at the factory . & Driving along a dark, icy country road at 80mph on his way home from a Christmas Eve party Rick felt confident that he could handle his car while under the influence of alcohol . Suddenly he braked thinking he had seen an animal in the middle of the road. The car skidded, swerved and hit a tree . Rick lost consciousness for a couple of minutes and when he came to he felt a sharp pain in his leg. It must be broken , he thought. As well as this, he felt a dull ache in his head. He was lucky to be alive. & Rick's car hit a tree. Rick managed to get out of the car, but as he did so he slipped and fell over. Holding on to the door handle he pulled himself up. He saw that the front of his car was badly damaged . After a minute or so considering what to do, he decided to make his way to the nearest village. He closed the car door, without bothering to lock it. Nobody could steal it in that condition. Slowly he limped along the road, sliding on his bottom whenever the surface sloped or was too icy. & I remember a film, I forget what it was called , in which four people were interrogated about the character and life style of a woman who had been murdered . All of them had known her well, but to each of them she presented a different picture. The man who loved her knew her as amusing and intelligent. The girl who had been at school with her said she was reserved and slow to make friends. Her boss , for whom she worked as a secretary, found her hardworking but boring , the last person to inspire passion, let alone murder. & Customs officers at London Airport yesterday found $100,000 worth of drugs which were being smuggled into Britain in boxes labelled "Urgent Medical Supplies". The authorities have suspected for some time that drugs were being brought into the country in this way. The operation is believed to be the work of a well organized international gang. Four men were arrested at the airport and held for questioning, but it is unlikely that they are the organisers. In fact they said that they were unaware of what the boxes contained and had acted in good faith in bringing them into Britain. & For a number of reasons my images of Italy seem to be dominated by thousands of roads and the journeys I have made along them. The wide motorways sweep majestically across the landscape as if to demonstrate that the Italians of today know as much about road building as their ancestors. I am not the only enthusiast for the Italian highway system. Charles Dickens wrote : "There is nowhere in Italy more beautiful to me than the coast road between Genoa and Spezia". It is easy to understand why he was so attracted to that pleasant stretch of coastline. & In 1935 Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly from America to Europe, began a round-the-world flight , starting in California and going west, but she crashed on take-off in Honolulu and had to give up the attempt. However, in 1937 she decided to try again, this time in the opposite direction. A month after leaving California she was in New Guinea where she was preparing for the flight to Howland island, a small Pacific island where no aircraft had ever landed. The distance between these two points was over 4000 kilometres. & Students who come to England to learn English usually want to live with a family. More often than not, life in the average British nuclear family doesn't differ very much from life in the average family at home. The British family may be made up of fewer members; there may be only two children , but family life itself follows the well-known daily pattern . Take the Browns for example. They live in a small semi -detached house outside London with a small garden and front yard, not to mention a garage. & The Browns live in a small semi-detached house outside London with a small garden and front yard not to mention a garage. Their two children attend a local school and leave home about eight every morning. Mr Brown goes to work a little earlier, and Mrs Brown, who was a teacher before her marriage , has recently got a job in a local primary school. Their house is not new, in fact it was built in Victorian times , at least a hundred years ago. Mrs Brown, who is very keen on gardening, says she feels the garden is the only part of the place that hasn't really changed since the nineteenth century. & As a boy I would play football every weekend, usually on Saturday . I never used to mind the cold. I was always coming back home covered in bruises. Recently, I talked to some friends about the old days. We realised that our interest in sport had changed . Now we stay at home and watch football and tennis matches on television. Our wives complain that they have been made "football widows". Some of us have hobbies , such as woodwork or drawing and others learn foreign languages . Almost all of us do some gardening at the weekend or even a bit of jogging, which has become very popular. & Like many cities in Europe, ours is made up of numerous small villages. The city began spilling over and pushing out in the nineteenth century after the railway had ruined the look of the place anyway. The earliest traces of permanent building go back to the Romans. First they put up a camp beside a bend in the river after forcing the local tribe to move out. The camp was then destroyed by the tribe who unfortunately were felled like trees during the attack. A hundred years later Romans had walled the area in, pulled down the old buildings , and made a town. & There are several plans of action to quit smoking. The first plan is to decide a few weeks in advance that you are going to give it up. Then cut down slowly during the weeks ahead. And then give it up for good. The second plan works better when you're on holiday. The change in your day habits helps you to give it up. Or try walking to work for a change. Also develop an interest in a different newspaper, or even listen to programmes on the radio instead of always watching TV. The third way is changing your eating pattern. Try to cut down on snacks. & A true journalist will deny himself every comfort to get a story for his paper. He will sit out all night in pouring rain , will subject himself to below zero temperatures , will put up with floods and never complain. Many people feel they have little to thank journalists for except a constant flow of bad news. But the journalist works like a dog in conditions that would give almost anybody else bad dreams for life. Not to mention shattered nerves and bitten nails . All the time the journalist has to compete with other newsmen for stories that are becoming harder to get. & If you were to go into your local supermarket on a weekday morning about eleven o'clock, you would almost certainly find more than half of the cash points not working. You would have to stand in a queue for as long as it had earlier taken you to choose your goods from the shelves. You should not be surprised. The managers can't get enough people to work for them. If you asked what was the solution to the problem, the manager would probably tell you that the new laser-scanning system is the answer. It gives you a bill more quickly than a human cashier can and it can provide a list of the items on your receipt. & Some people have opinions about everything and are ready to give you their opinion at the drop of a hat. You can't stop some people from telling you what they think about doctors the moment you happen to mention visiting a sick friend in hospital . You just can't avoid hearing all about it. Another friend tells you what needs putting right in the world if you merely say you heard the government is thinking about putting the price of petrol up again. Only a brave person or an idiot would ever argue with anyone like that. & Coventry is an old town . It is a great engineering centre , producing motorcars and bicycles. During the Second World War Coventry was one of the most heavily bombed British towns. Shortly after the war a large part of the town was completely rebuilt . Now it looks very modern. The new shopping centre is particularly interesting because there is no road traffic in it at all. It is a large square with buildings on two sides. There are shops on the ground floor and the first floor and flats above. & In the old days before photography was invented , kings often had court painters to their courts. The main job of a court painter was to make portraits of the king , his family, his courtiers and his friends. Hans Holbein, the court painter of King Henry VIII, was born in Bavaria in 1515. He became court painter in 1535. He made several portraits for the king. Many of them were destroyed by fire, but there are some fine examples of Holbein's art to be seen at the National Gallery , at Windsor Castle and at other famous galleries. & On April 14th, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln went to Ford's Theatre in Washington to see a performance of a play called "Our American Cousin". The president , his wife and some friends arrived at the theatre at about nine o'clock. At ten o'clock John Wilkes Booth, a well known actor and a Confederate fanatic, entered the theatre and went straight towards Lincoln's box. He had no difficulty in entering the theatre because everyone there knew him well. He waited until the president's guard left his place outside the box and went away. Booth entered the box and fired his gun at Lincoln's head.
