AB 20 patients with AIDS (IV Group, CDC, 1987) were submitted to
stimulation with human CRH (100mg EV route) in order to evaluate the
function of hypothalamus-hypophysis-Adrenal-Axis (HHAA). Basal and
post-hCRH: ACTH, Cortisol(F) and Aldosterone (A) plasmatic levels were
performed. Results. Normal response of ACTH, together with normal
response of F and A (35%), and hyporesponse only of A (5%), hyporesponse
of ACTH associated with normal response of F and A (5%) with
hyporesponse of F (5%) and A (5%) and of both hormones (10%), and
finally hyper response of ACTH with hyporesponse of F and A (35%)
Conclusions: It was possible to diagnose disfunctions of HHAA low
reserve of the hypothalamus and hypophysis and subclinical adrenal
insufficiency using hCRH test in patients with AIDS.
