AB OBJECTIVE: For three years now, ARCAT-SIDA (NGO) have been running a HIV
trials data collection and distribution system for information exchange
between professionals and a wide public range. The methodology used and
the main results obtained are presented below. METHODS: From March to
October 1993, a systematic and huge date collection campaign was
launched towards the ANRS, sponsoring pharmaceutical firms (24),
hospital wards (166) and clinical investigators which participated in
the previous issue (165). The trials retained concern persons in phase I
to IV and omply both with French Law and the GCP. The presentation data
sheets are drawn up by specialized physician and based on the
information received, whereas actual editing is submitted to prior
approval by the sponsors and the investigators. Once the trials are
completed, the corresponding results are also collected and integrated.
The trials in progress are presented on a double-page format. The LH
side page describes the trial within the overall research context and
reminds the main scientific pre-requisites. The RH side page provides
the main technical characteristics together with a practical overview of
the trials; this is issued both in French and in English. It also
presents, when available, the main data on molecules (30) assessed
during these trials. RESULTS: Almost all the French actors in the HIV
field responded favourably (only one refusal). For the period of
concern, 96 trials have been registered. During the year 1993, 41 trials
were completed; they included 4505 patients and resulted in 19
abstracts, 4 papers and 2 letters issued in scientific journals. In
       October 1993, 55 trials were in progress (Pl = 15, Ol = 21, tumoral
       diseases = 8, immunotherapy = 6, others = 5) and concerned 7556
patients. A comprehensive table on HIV trial research in France, from
the second term of 1992 to December 1993 is provided, together with a
balance of information distribution and broadcast (4000 copies for the
first issue were distributed as of December 31 1993; 5000 copies of the
1994 issue have been edited). CONCLUSIONS: ARCAT-SIDA have set up a
scientific information distribution and broadcasting network in France,
thus making of each actor a real partner. ARCAT-SIDA are not an
institutional actor and as such they have established an environment of
trust and confidence which enhances information exchange. The ethics
applied for information exchange, by simply distributing the information
without any comments, has reinforced this trustworthiness. This
presentation meets professional needs and PWA expectations in this
field. This information exchange with our various partners will be
continued and in 1994, ARCAT-SIDA will take an active part in the
Inter-Act (International Aids Clinical Trials Data Base) for data
information sharing and circulation on a worldwide scale.
