AB OBJECTIVE: Prohivitive cost and toxicity of the anti-retroviral drugs
are major impediments in HIV chemotherapy today. In developing countries
the number of HIV positive cases are rapidly on increase and large
masses residing in rural areas often seek treatment from Traditional
Medical Practitioners (TMPs). It is essential therefore to explore and
assess the role of alternative medicine in HIV infection. METHODS:
Ayurveda and homeopathy are the most followed disciplines in India.
Ayurveda, based on correction of 'DOSHAS'-result of imbalance of five
'dhatus' has many immunomodulators. Crude method of preparation of drugs
and dosage schedules need scientific evaluation. Homeopathy based on the
principle of 'Similia Similibus' also corrects imbalances in the body.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Immediate attention to alternative drugs
clinical trial is essential. The possibility of exploitation by false
claims need to be prevented. The paper will discuss in detail the
'Ayurvedic' immunomodulatory drugs with their earlier proven indications
and the ethical guidelines for TMPs.
