 AB    OBJECTIVES: Research and report on alternative treatments for HIV
       infection. Alternative treatments are being used and reported to have an
       effect on symptoms, blood levels. METHOD: Section I: An overview of the
       current Western and alternative medical theories, length of infection,
       of asymptomatic, ARC and AIDS. Section II: Alternative treatments,
       studies and uses of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, massage, exercises,
       chiropractic, Western herbs, homeopathics, aroma therapy, vitamins,
       macrobiotics and nutrition. Section III: Treatment strategies, Western
       and alternative, and current treatment options utilized by people with
       HIV infection. RESULTS: Alternative treatments for HIV infection have
       shown: 1) a reduction and improvement of symptoms; 2) an improvement of
       blood levels and immune functions; 3) a reduction in side-effects for
       Western (allopathic) drug treatments. Alternative treatments
       consistently are included in treatment plans of HIV infected, long-term
       survivors. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Alternative therapies and
       treatments are showing more effectiveness and need to be researched
       further. More detailed information on the effectiveness needs to be
       widely disseminated to researchers, patients.
