AB OBJECTIVE: To humanize the clinic environment in which AIDS patients are
treated--create a bridge to the community for HIV/AIDS
education--empower the artists to create long term goals that promote
confidence and self esteem to enhance quality of life. METHODS: A
loosley formed group of people whose lives have been impacted by
HIV/AIDS, they volunteer their time because they care about human life.
They operate under and are part of the Volunteer Services Department of
the Medical Center. This program empowers patients to take an active
role in living with HIV/AIDS. RESULTS: The efforts have resulted in
quarterly art shows that have transformed the three story HIV/AIDS
Clinic into an art gallery. The work is on display continuously and is
enjoyed by patients, staff and the public. Some works have been sold and
the participants who are patients, and the staff are enjoying a better
quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: We can document that patients at end stage
have actually gained weight and taken on a new interest in living since
their participation in this program. Other patients have gained a new
sense of worth and rediscovered talents that they can now share with
others. Some are discovering pride in leadership qualities. Staff
benefits from sharing the patients' interests in a positive way.
