AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the nutritional status of HIV nonvertically
infected children and the relation with disease stages. METHODS:
Patients were 90 boys nonvertically infected with HIV. Assessment of
nutritional status was made using measurements of head circumference,
weight, length and reporting them to growth charts. RESULTS: Half of
children were coming from orphanges and half from families. There were
no statistic differences in the structure by age of children from these
two groups. In 1990, 90% of children from orphanages and only 25% of
children from families had protein energy malnutrition (PEM).
CONCLUSIONS: Children from orphanages had PEM due to inadequate dietary
intake. This modified the natural course of HIV infection. PEM produced
in these children an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome similar to AIDS.
In children coming from families, the onset of symptomatic infection was
later than in children from orphanages. Weight loss of children from
families was associated with progression of HIV infection.
