AB OBJECTIVE: To describe our protocols for the home administration of
intravenous Amphotericin B by patients and caregivers. BACKGROUND:
Amphotericin B is labled For intravenous infusion in hospitals only.
Nevertheless, home intravenous administration of Amphotericin B occurs.
RESULTS: We present our experience with the home administration of
Amphotericin B. We discuss administration by nurses, patients, and
non-professional caregivers. We outline our protocols and guidelines for
patient/caregiver selection criteria, training, equipment, and on-going
clinical monitoring. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The emphasis on self-care and cost
containment has shifted home care responsibilities from the nurse to the
patient/caregiver. 2. Home administration of Amphotericin B can be
       economical, safe, and practical.
