AB OBJECTIVE: We examined patients whose stay in hospital exceeded 6 month,
analyzed and discussed the factors prolonging hospitalization and
conditions necessary for treatment at home from the nursing point of
view. METHODS: 1) Dec. 1993-Feb. 1994: 2) Yokohama Municipal University
School of Medicine Afiliated Hospital: 3) We selected 3 patients who had
remained in our ward for more than 6 months, and identified, compared
and examined their problems. RESULTS: 1) These patients required
assistance in their daily activities. 2) They tended to be supported by
people who did not know about their infection. 3) Support for ambulatory
treatment from people other than key persons was very limited.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The following four conditions are necessary
for home treatment. The care provided to patients with HIV infection is
considerably limited in Japan at present when compared with the current
situation in which cancer patients are allowed to choose from treatment
       at home, hospice or hospital.
