AB OBJECTIVE: To set a standard of quality uniform care for HIV/AIDS
patients regionally. To provide information to practitioners who are not
experts on HIV disease. To create an HIV curriculum component for use in
medical, nursing and other health professional educational programs.
METHODS: A community-based consortium organized a regional effort to
write comprehensive guidelines for all aspects of HIV care. RESULTS: The
final document was the culmination of efforts by more than 50 health
care and social service professionals in the Greater Hartford area. The
guidelines focus not only on medical care but address the wide array of
issues that providers encounter when caring for people with HIV. These
include case management, legal and financial issues, housing, chemical
dependence, community resources and special sections on pregnancy,
children, women and adolescents. They are unique in that they are
practical, regionally-focused and serve as a road map to guide the user
through the complexities of HIV care. CONCLUSION: The guidelines have
been well received, in part because they were a collaborative effort.
They have been ordered by social service agencies, prisons, medical
clinics, health departments, nursing homes, private practitioners, legal
service agencies, home care agencies, HIV counselors and others.
