AB ISSUE: With the expansion of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil, an increased
demand for HIV testing has been observed. In 1992, the Brazilian
National AIDS Control Program established as a national priority the
creation of anonymous testing centers (ATC). OBJECTIVES: To implement
138 ATC at priority sites in the country in 4 years, and to meet the
nationwide demand for HIV testing in accordance with preestablished
uniform guidelines. METHODS: Technical guidelines were elaborated by the
National STD/AIDS Control Programme. Each center had a trained
multidisciplinary team. Epidemiological criteria were considered in the
site selection. The ATC were established in collaboration with Municipal
and State Health Departments. RESULTS: By February, 1994, 60 health
professionals were trained. In the same period, 20 ATC were implemented,
with financial support from the Brazilian National STD/AIDS Control
Programme. The first 4 centers assisted about 25,000 people in the first
year. CONCLUSION: The implementation of ATC have shown the feasibility
of this strategy in Brazil. Although ATC have not been formally
evaluated, they certainly will contribute to the early diagnosis of HIV
infection and to the promotion of non-risk practices among attenders.
