AB OBJECTIVE. To evaluate the efficacy of a day-care hospitalization area
for HIV patients. METHODS. four beds and ten armchairs attended by a
medical doctor, one nurse, and an auxiliar nurse provide medical
treatment for AIDS patients in a specially designed room in a reference
center for AIDS in Madrid. The unit is open 8 hours daily from Monday to
Friday every week. RESULTS. Since February 1989 to December 1993, 14410
medical interventions has been done: 951 in 1989, 2550 en 1990, 2894 in
1991, 3139 in 1992 and 3246 in 1993. They were assigned to the following
actions: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS. These data
confirm that the day-care units may be very usefull to the hospital
admissions, and to provide daily medications in HIV-patients living at
home. In addition, this service permit reduce the mean time for hospital
admissions in patients who require long-time parenteral treatments. This
should be considered in order to reduce cost in AIDS units. A collateral
effect is the psycollogical benefit and a best quality of life reported
by some patients using this service.
