AB OBJECTIVE: To estimate the impact of medical care in clinic specializing
in HIV-infection on the duration of AIDS patients' life. METHODS: As of
31 Dec. 1993, 37 adult persons were reported as AIDS patients in Russia.
The life-time of the 19 adult AIDS sufferers receiving treatment in
Russia Federal AIDS Centre during 1987-1990 and 1991-1993 periods (Group
       I) was compared vs. the life-time of the 18 adult AIDS sufferers not
being treated in that clinic during the same periods (Group II).
Statistical significance was evaluated using Fisher's Tests. RESULTS: In
       Group I the life-time > 1 year was in 2 (29%) among 7 patients who were
treated before 1991 and in 8 (67%) among 12 patients who were treated
       since 1991 (p < 0.05). In Group II--in 1 (25%) among 4 and in 2 (14%)
among 14 accordingly (p > 0.05). Thus, the percentage of AIDS patients
staying alive for more than 1 year after diagnosis for the last 3 years
in Group I increased and in Group II didn't increase and remained
significantly less (p < 0.05) than in Group I. DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSIONS: Apparently the present increase in life-time of AIDS
patients being under observation in Russian Federal AIDS Centre for the
last years as well as their longer life-span in comparison with other
Russian clinics is connected with acquired experience of medical care
and treatment of HIV-infected patients. It is the evidence of the
necessity to conduct medical care and treatment of HIV-infected patients
       in specialized clinics.
