AB OBJECTIVE: To provide anonymous HIV testing & counseling services in
Bombay. METHOD: The Indian Health organisation (IHO) and Salvation Army
established India's first Anonymous HIV testing centre in downtown
Bombay in 1992. The centre has a doctor, a counselor, a positive person
and technician as staff. The centre is popularised through wall
paintings, handouts and a hot line. RESULTS: During 1993 a total of 314
males and 57 females attended the centre for anonymous HIV testing.
These were based on self referals as they considered themselves at high
risk. Subsequent to counseling, 302 (96.2%) of males and 56 (98.2%) of
females preferred to reveal their identity. Their demographic profile
was: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: The success of
anonymous testing centre depends on the quality of counseling and user
friendly environment. Such centres are workable in developing countries
       like India.
