AB OBJECTIVE: To improve diagnosis of, and reduce drugs for treating
opportunistic conditions. METHODS: Existing clinical guidelines were
updated through multisectoral consensus. Training workshops were
conducted for selected personnel in accurate diagnosis and appropriate
medication. Guidelines were field-tested for and revised. RESULTS: Most
patients were managed with less than 3 different drugs and the duration
of usage reduced to less than 5 days. CONCLUSION: Rational drug use will
reduce costs. Extensive training is required for country-wide
       application of the standard.
