AB Large numbers of children will be orphaned through the AIDS-related
deaths of their parents. Recent statistics reveal that the number of
persons infected with human immune deficiency virus (HIV), the virus
that causes AIDS, is still growing. To date, understanding the etiology
and epidemiology of HIV has been the highest priority in the response to
AIDS. Most attention has focused on those who have contracted the
disease, the primary victims. Social programs have emerged to help
victims cope with their illness and inevitable death, and medical
programs strive to develop a preventive vaccine. Other programs have
searched for ways to provide support for families and friends of those
infected, the secondary victims. Less attention has been directed
towards the needs of still another group affected, those who are
dependent on individuals who have contracted AIDS, the tertiary victims.
This group consists of spouses and living partners, elderly parents left
childless, and children left fatherless, motherless, or orphaned. This
article deals specifically with the impact on children.
