AB OBJECTIVES: 1. To study the seroprevalence of HIV infection in 04
prisons of Rio de Janeiro State: 2. To provide information, counseling,
health care and psychosocial assistance to inmates: 3. To form
information multipliers out of the inmates. METHODS: Since May 1993 a
multiprofessional team composed by physicians (01), medical students
(08), social workers (02) and psychologists (01) provide weekly visits,
regular lectures on STD/AIDS, confidential and voluntary HIV testing,
counseling before and after serology, health care and psychosocial
assistance to inmates from 04 prisons in Rio de Janeiro State: Talavera
Bruce, Moniz Sodre, Evaristo de Moraes and Ary Franco. The program is
supported logistically by the government of Rio de Janeiro State.
RESULTS: A seropositivity rate of 36.7% (32 out of 87) (voluntary
testing). The way of acquisition of HIV infection was homosexual route
in 34.37%, heterosexual + IV drug use in 34.37%, heterosexual route in
9.37%, bisexual route in 15.62% and blood transfusion in 6.25%. Inmates
frequently feel themselves stimulated in making questions during
lectures, asking for personal counseling and HIV testing and in being a
channel of dissemination personal counseling and HIV testing and in
being a channel of dissemination of information. DISCUSSION: Even having
been recently implemented, we believe the program is of utmost
importance in providing appropriate message, counseling as well as
health and psychosocial assistance to inmates. We hope the program will
prove to be the embryo of a broader and more ambitions policy for
preventing HIV transmission in prisons and providing health and
psychosocial assistance to inmates in Rio de Janeiro State.
