 AB    OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence of HIV-1 in patients with
       sickle cell disease (HBSS). DESIGN: Cross sectional study. SETTING:
       Sickle Cell Clinic, University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia.
       PATIENTS: 154 children and adults with sickle cell disease (HBSS).
       RESULTS: Overall, 22 patients (14%; 95% confidence interval 9 to 19%)
       were positive for HIV-1 antibodies using the ELISA (Wellcozyme Assay).
       The relation of the prevalence of HIV-1 positive patients to age group,
       history of receiving blood transfusion, skin herbal scarification, sex,
       past medical conditions and current medical conditions is reported.
       DISCUSSION: The prevalence of HIV-1 in the patients with sickle cell
       disease (HBSS) was lower than the prevalence in the general population
       of Zambia.
