AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalance of HIV infection in the context of
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in CSWs in Pune. METHODS: As a part
of an ongoing logitudinal study, the Preparation of AIDS Vaccine
Efficacy (PAVE) in India, the clinical & laboratory assessment for STDS
and HIV was done among 278 CSWs attending a STD Clinic. RESULTS: The
seroprevalence of HIV infection among the CSWs was 42.9%. Among the
infected, 85.8% had HIV-1 and 12.4% had dual infection. Only 2/113
(1.8%) infected women showed evidence of HIV-2 infection. Age specific
       seroprevalence rates were 37% (20 years), 50% (21-30 Years) and 29.5%
(31-40 Years). HIV serostatus was found to be dependent on age (x2 =
       9.18, D.F. = 2, P 0.01). Condom usage was found not to be correlated
with age. The prevalance of HIV infection was 51.2% among CSWs with
acute history of STD as against 27.9% without it. CSWs presenting with
chancroid, pelvic, inflammatory desease, & trichomonal and candidial
vaginitis had higher prevalance of HIV infection. CONCLUSIONS: Pune city
is witnessing a recent and explosive HIV epidemic. High incidence of
STDs in the CSWs, although expected, is likely to make them more
vulnerable to complications in the presence of HIV infection. There is a
need for emphasis on condom promotion and more effective STD control
       among CSWs.
