AB OBJECTIVES: A nested case-control study to evaluate the prevalence of
HIV infection among low-income PSW. METHODOLOGY: After counselling and
proper consent 80 PSW's who voluntarily came to our clinic answered a
standardized questionnaire and had their blood tested for HIV. RESULTS:
Five women (6.25%) were found to be positive for HIV. Condom use was
high with paying clients (70%) and low with non paying (5%). They all
denied anal sex and 82.5% had over 20 clients a week, with 44% reporting
a change in behavior related to AIDS. The use of condoms was the most
frequent change. One reported having sex with bisexual and IVDU partners
with an irregular condom use. The remainder, however, reported having
used condoms regularly during the last year and denied having had sex
with bisexual or IVDU partners. Four out of five reported changes in
behavior since the AIDS epidemics. Most of the control PSWs (n = 15)
have changed their behavior (especially in relation to condom usage)
with all of them reporting to have used condoms for the 3 previous
years. CONCLUSION: This study is representative of a low-income
prostitution area in Belo Horizonte and the prevalence of 6.25% is still
low, indicating that the epidemic is spreading among this population at
a slower rate than among homosexual/bisexual and IVDUs. The use of
condoms was the main difference between the case and controls,
emphasizing its importance in the control of HIV infection.
