AB INTRODUCTION: Between september 1992 and february 1993, a survey was
carried out in a community of prostitutes in Rio de Janeiro in order to
verify seroprevalence of HIV 1 infection, syphilis and risk factors
related to HIV+. METHODS: 143 women from a total of 500 had their blood
sampled after consent and were interviewed, by one of the authors.
Western BLOT was performed for those HIV+ for ELISA; VDRL was done for
syphilis screening. A multivariate analysis was performed. RESULTS: We
have found a mean number of clients of 45.2 weekly. A seroprevalence of
11.2% (16/143) was found for HIV 1 infection and 11.2% for syphilis
(VDRL 1/8). HIV 1 infection was significantly related to duration of
       prostitution (OR: 4, 16), anal intercourse (OR: 4, 34), existence of a
steady sexual partner (non-client) (OR: 3, 84). Only two women were IV
drug user and one of them was HIV 1 positive. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of
HIV 1 among sex workers in Rio de Janeiro is high compared to general
population. Factors related to sexual activity and not with IV drugs,
were associated with increased risk of infection.
