AB OBJECTIVES: To assess HIV-related knowledge, attitude, belief (KAB)
among prostitutes in four cities in China. METHODS: An anonymous
questionnaire was given to 267 female prostitutes (244 self-administer
and 23 structural interview) in detention centers (a kind of education
       camp) located in Beijing (n = 83), Nanjing (n = 64), Dalian (n = 72) and
Xian (n = 48). Prostitutes were selected using methods available to
researchers entering the Chinese Detention Centre. RESULTS: Concerning
the knowledge about AIDS and attitude to condom, respondents in Beijing
scored the highest and respondents in Xian scored the lowest (p 0.01).
Only 34.8% of the respondents knew that a condom could protect HIV
transmission. 69% of the respondents thought the probability of their
getting HIV infection was very low or non-existent. The reported average
total number of clients was 4.93. Number of clients per prostitute
ranging from 1 over 100. Over 45% of respondents never used condoms,
4.2% reported anal intercourse, 5.0% reported smoking drugs, and 28.1%
reported ever having an STD. No sero-positive HIV was reported among any
of the respondents. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: A potential risk of HIV
TRANSMISSION exists among prostitutes in the four cities and health
education about HIV for prostitutes has not been sufficient.
