AB OBJECTIVE: To compare sentinel survey prevalence rates of HIV antibody
and p24 antigen in direct and indirect female sex workers, and male STD
clinic users in 5 northern Thai provinces, and to measure HIV antibody
negative, p24 positive prevalence METHODS: The Thai national sentinel
surveillance for HIV has sampled high risk populations for HIV antibody
twice-yearly since 1989. In 1991-1992 we added testing for p24 Ag to 3
sentinel surveys in 5 northern provinces. HIV Ab was assayed with
commercial ELISA, p24 with sandwich ELISA and confirmed with a
neutralization assay. RESULTS: No HIV antibody negative p24 positive
indirect CSWs were identified in 3 surveys of 100 women each. Direct sex
workers and male STD patients showed: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of both HIV Ab and HIV p24 Antigenemia has
been increasing in 2 groups of high risk northern Thai adults. Of 34 HIV
p24 positive subjects, 22 (65%) were HIV Ab negative by ELISA.
