AB The first case of AIDS in India was detected in Bombay during 1986. By
December 1993 Bombay (Maharashtra) has reported the highest No. of AIDS
cases (231) and 13,797 high risk group Elisa reactives. To have an
yearwise estimation on transmission & prevalence of HIV in Bombay and
other parts of Maharashtra and to suggest measures for prevention and
control the present study was undertaken. Baseline Survey of prostitutes
in Bombay revealed 60000 brothel-based Commercial Sex Workers having HIV
       positivity to be 20% (1990), 35% (1991), 40% (1992) and 45% (1993) with
an average sex contacts a day to be 4. HIV positivity rate has shown a
constant rise of 5% per year. By the year 2000 A.D. 80% of Commercial
Sex Workers would be HIV positive, No. of sex contacts with infected
prostitute would be 5,76,00,000 from the present level of 3,24,00,000
and 5,76,000 would be HIV positive in Bombay alone. HIV prevalence among
blood donors has doubled in a period of 1 year. Blood safety policy has
prevented 13991 HIV infections. The study recommends immediate control &
preventive measures on war footings in Bombay.
