 AB    OBJECTIVES: To minimise spread of STDs among sex workers and clients so
       as to reduce spread of HIV infection in areas of Chengai M.G.R.District.
       METHODS: Private Medical Practitioners--PMPs (Indian systems of
       medicines, Homeopathy Paramedical staffs, those employed in medicine
       related establishments) & Traditional healers (both untrained) prevail
       in majority (30 STD Specialist). Ensured confidentiality (unlike with
       General Practitioners) consulting fees cheaper (Rs.3 to Rs.5 when
       compared minimum of Rs.15 to Rs.30 with GPs) & acceptance, enabled
       invariable increase of clients to contact PMPs before or after each
       sexual contact to be prevented or treated from STDs. sex workers treated
       by PMPs. Dependencs of clients & sex workers on PMPs & immense faith of
       PMPs on former. No awareness about STD/HIV/AIDS. lack of STD Care &
       Counselling. RESULTS: Orientation & training for PMPs on STD care &
       treatment (30 PMPs identified & trained on aspects of HIV/AIDS
       prevention & care & treatment of STD--6 programs conducted) initiated
       training to our staffs on aspects of HIV/AIDS prevention (30 staffs).
       Serve a link between Govt. bodies & PMPs for technical inputs and
       suports to treat STD Pilot intervention through targeted IEC aimed at
       raising awarness, peer education and training of affiliates. CONCLUSION:
       Need to target the entire circuits with messages and skills of
       STD/HIV/AIDS with sex workers and clients to combat AIDS. Need to
       develop Condom usage among sex workers and clients. Use and importance
       of disposable syringes will be initiated.
