AB OBJECTIVES: To establish if shared HLA antigens could have influenced
the long-term survival of the Sydney cohort and to further examine the
recipient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) who died from
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) to establish if the PCP was due to
immunosuppressive therapy and not due to AIDS. METHODS: 1. To tissue
type the cohort for HLA Class 1 and 11 alleles. 2. To compare the
clinical history of the SLE recipient with HIV negative
immunocompromised adults who developed PCP. RESULTS: The group shared no
common HLA alleles or haplotypes. The clinical history of the recipient
closely resembled that of 27 HIV-negative patients with PCP. The
immunosuppressive regimens used in these patients were very similar to
that administered to the recipient. CONCLUSION: 1. Tissue typing of the
cohort clearly demonstrated that sharing of HLA antigens did not
influence the long-term survival of the group. 2. We believe the SLE
recipient did not die from AIDS and her PCP was a direct result of her
       immunosuppressive therapy.
