AB AIMS: A prospective study of bereavement following an AIDS death is
being conducted, investigating patterns of bereavement response, risk
factors to pathological grief and comparison with a group of cancer
bereaved individuals. METHOD: 32 AIDS and 41 cancer bereaved subjects
       (mostly parents and partners/spouse) completed a semi-structured
interview and self-report measures of psychological symptoms and grief
(General Health Questionnaire, Impact of Event Scale, Bereavement
Phenomenology Measure). FINDINGS: The AIDS bereaved group reported
significantly higher rates of adverse risk factors: lower emotional and
practical social support before and after the death (p < .05), lower
disclosure of the diagnosis, and greater number of other losses (p <
.01). High and equivalent rates of psychiatric morbidity were detected
in both groups (up to 74%). At three months following the death no
differences were detected between the groups in grief phenomena or
psychological symptoms, suggesting similar early bereavement response,
though the higher risk factors in the pre AIDS group may lead to later
       morbidity.
