 AB Much of the focus on AIDS dementia has concentrated on epidemiological,
       diagnostic and treatment issues. Another important dimension is the
       educational needs of carers. Carers often experience a range of
       difficulties when caring for the person with AIDS dementia. These
       difficulties may be exacerbated by: disparate and at times contradictory
       research findings; a variety of definitions of dementia used by
       different professionals; confusion between dementia and cognitive
       change; confusion between dementia and other psychiatric illnesses;
       negative attitudes toward people with dementing illnesses; lack of
       access to information regarding the management of behavioural
       difficulties; lack of specialised support services (both at a community
       and institutional level); complexity of emotional issues, e.g.
       over-identification, role changes, grief. In response to this need, the
       nursing division of Fairfield Hospital, with the support of the
       Victorian Health Department, has developed an education program for
       carers of people with AIDS dementia.
