AB The physiotherapist is integral to the multidisciplinary team working in
HIV. The role of the physiotherapist is often poorly understood and
therefore frequently under utilised. The physiotherapist offers
intervention in the following areas: 1. Respiratory disorders. Obtaining
sputum specimens, treatment of pneumonias and other chest complaints,
and restoration of fitness & strength following acute infections. 2.
Neurological disorders. Gait re-education, provision of mobility aids
such as walking sticks & frames, maintenance of joint and soft tissue
integrity during acute infections and rehabilitation following
infection. 3. Musculoskeletal disorders. Interventions for back, neck
and other musculoskeletal pain, management of lymphoedema secondary to
K.S., sporting injuries & HIV related arthritic disorders. Finally, the
physiotherapist is often involved in exercise programmes specifically
for HIV positive clients, or alternatively can provide appropriate
exercise advice and ongoing monitoring for clients.
