AB OBJECTIVES: To train general practitioners in counselling skills as an
essential component of their ongoing management of HIV patients in a
community setting. METHODS: A state-funded training program in HIV
counselling has been run by the A.M. Centre for the past 3 years. This
is a one year, half day/week course open to health professionals and
other carers involved in the HIV field. Based on evaluation of this
course as well as extensive experience in HIV counselling training in
other settings, a counselling training program designed specifically for
general practitioners has been developed and recently conducted in
various locations. The structure of the course is a 2-5 day intensive
program with 2 day follow up 6 months later. The course is made up of
the theoretical, observational and experimental components. RESULTS:
Evaluation of the one year course revealed significant improvement in
conceptual, assessment and interventive skills as well as increased
confidence in managing complex HIV psychosocial issues. Initial
evaluation of the G.P. Intensives indicates similar results, with
generalisation to non-HIV cases. Feedback highlighted the importance of,
and general lack of, peer support for General Practitioners managing HIV
patients' psycho-social issues in the community. The 6 month follow up
workshop appears to be an important component in consolidating and
further developing these skills. CONCLUSION: In the general practice
management of HIV patients, there is a significant component of
psychosocial issues requiring specific HIV and general counselling
skills. The format and content of this course appears to be effective in
enabling General Practitioners to develop the confidence and skills
       necessary for this counselling role.
