AB In 1992, an elective programme was introduced into the undergraduate
medical curriculum at Monash University. This programme 'An Introduction
to HIV Medicine' aimed to provide a broader view than that provided by
ward-based clinical teaching. It included perspectives from general
practice, counsellors, people living with AIDS, and support and
education groups. The responses of the students are
presented--indicating the impact that this programme had on the
knowledge of HIV medicine and HIV infected persons, attitudes to those
infected and those at risk, and their perceived ability to manage
patients. In addition, the insights gained by interacting with
ambulatory patients and the opportunity to view counselling sessions are
reported. The student's knowledge and attitudes were investigated before
       and after the programme.
