AB Poverty and culture are important determinants of condom use and
socio-economic factors are linked to STDs in adolescents. The aim of the
study is to investigate disadvantaged youths' risk for HIV, STDs and
unwanted pregnancies and to ascertain the critical behavioural and
psychosocial determinants of high risk sexual behaviour. More
specifically, it is necessary to determine to what extent the presence
of STD(s) among these young people is associated with the non-use of
condoms and to examine whether or not the determinants of having STD(s)
are the same as or different from the determinants of non-use of
condoms. This paper addresses the methodological issues associated with
collecting sexual health data from a sample of 15 to 19 year old
disadvantaged youth and presents the results from a pilot study.
