AB Western Sydney is the largest sector of the city of Sydney comprising an
extensive industrial base and dormitory suburbs of 1.3 million people of
diverse socio-economic status. The 1989 Western Sydney Beats Study
established that there was an active network of illicit public sex
venues known as 'beats'. In that survey a second group of men was
identified who did not use beats, who were usually married and self
identified as heterosexual, while engaging in regular sexual contact
with a range of casual male partners who also lived in Western Sydney.
In 1991 a two-year outreach program was devised to gather more
comprehensive data on these men, as well as to provide a supportive
environment for HIV education to take place. Initial contact was
restricted to the telephone, and outreach was achieved by placing
advertisements in the Personal columns of local suburban newspapers. The
response rate was very high during each advertised period in 1991, 1992
and 1993. Study further highlights variance between sexual
relationships, sexual and personal identity; the inadequacy of 'labels'
and indicates the need for further investigation of where the normative
force of someone's behaviour comes from.
