AB HIV disease is associated with a wide variety of infections caused by
bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. Although some infections occur
only in patients with very low CD4 cell counts, others require only mild
to moderate immunosuppression. This article discusses the opportunistic
infections associated with HIV disease and reviews their clinical
presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, with an emphasis on
       emergency department diagnosis and management.
