SWITCHED DIGITAL SERVICE INTEGRATED SYSTEMS (SDS IS) DESCRIPTION ------------- SDS IS is a digital telecommunications service available from Pacific Bell. With SDS IS you can integrate voice, data and video over a single phone line, with all the high quality and increased data transmission speeds of a digital service. SDS IS provides users with switched (dialable) access and up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps) bandwidth capacity, with all the improved transmission quality associated with a digital service. CAPABILITIES --------------- SDS IS gives you the capability to run three telecommunications channels over a standard, twisted-pair telephone wire. One of the three channels is called the D channel, and it is available for packet data transfer at speeds of up to 9.6 kbps. You can elect to designate the two bearer channels for voice, for full duplex synchronous 56/64 kbps data transmission, or a combination. Additional flexibility comes from the optional features that SDS IS offers for voice calls: ADDITIONAL CALL APPEARANCE: Secondary phone numbers can be associated with a single SDS IS line, all ringing the same phone but displaying the different called number on the phone set. This allows you to treat incoming calls differently based on what number was dialed -- for example, to determine what function, person or department the caller is trying to reach. HOLD: The ability to put a caller on hold. CONSULTATION THREE WAY CONFERENCE: The ability to have three callers on a conference at once. CALL TRANSFER: The ability to transfer a call to another line COMPATIBILITY ----------------- SDS IS' compatibility with other Pacific Bell digital services -- Centrex IS, Public Packet Switching Network, and SDS 56 -- allows you to easily transport your data to different locations. Voice calls are compatible to all regular voice phones everywhere. Analog modems and analog fax machines work over SDS IS if the user has a Terminal Adapter with an RJ-11 interface -- in which case the modem or fax can be used over one of the voice channels at regular analog speeds. This capability varies depending on the Terminal Adapter, with some only allowing outgoing calls. WHAT YOU NEED ----------------- SDS IS is provided over a 1 MB (business line) from Pacific Bell. Non-business customers may also order 1 MB service and SDS IS. The user will need special equipment to use SDS IS, including: - NT1 ($200 to $300) - Power supply ($60 to $100) - Terminal Adapter ($600 - $1,500) - Additional equipment, depending on the application (e.g., phone, videoconferencing, computers, etc.) Optional battery back-up equipment may be available from some manufacturers. SDS IS lines require power from the user's location and will not operate during a power outage unless there is a local battery backup. Pacific Bell has arrangements with equipment manufacturers to help you select the correct equipment. BUSINESS USES FOR SDS IS ---------------------------- SDS IS fits hundreds of business situations. Some examples follow. RETAIL STORE REQUIRING POINT OF SALE (POS): Simultaneously use just one phone line for credit-card verification, receipt of faxes and handling customer inquiries. GRAPHIC DESIGNERS: SDS IS supports the need to transfer large files to different clients while discussing the images over the telephone at the same time. SDS IS has the (56 kbps) capabilities that make it ideal for bandwidth-intensive image transfer applications. MODEM USERS: With SDS IS, using a modem no longer means that a phone is temporarily rendered unable to receive other calls or faxes. Modem users will also appreciate the reliability and high-quality transmission that this digital service offers. (This requires a special Terminal Adapter with an RJ-11 interface.) PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: Organizations such as law firms and insurance companies frequently need to simultaneously review and discuss documents. SDS IS provides the means to efficiently transport on-line documents and images from a central database or between enterprise locations. The benefits include better documentation handling and logging capabilities as well as reduced storage, duplication and retrieval costs. UNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS: SDS IS provides an easy and cost-effective way to telecast lectures or experiments to multiple locations, such as satellite campuses. SATALLITE HOME OFFICES: The ability to duplicate the office environment at home, with access to company databases and enterprise LAN networks, improves telecommuting productivity and reduces employer costs while reducing traffic congestion and pollution. TELECASTING TRAINING, PRESENTATIONS AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT: SDS IS can provide the necessary (56 kbps or 112 kbps) data speeds to provide high quality multimedia transmission. DESKTOP VIDEO USERS: SDS IS helps realize the potential of desktop video by allowing it to be coupled with screen sharing to improve the efficiency of the application. CONNECTING LANS: SDS IS can be a cost-effective way to link distant LANs. With the right equipment, data destined for a remote LAN can be recognized and the line automatically dialed for a connection through SDS IS. CONNECTING REMOTE USERS TO LANS: SDS IS can be a cost-effective way to connect remote users (PCs, Macintoshes and workstations) to their company LAN or host computer.
