ISDN Primary Rate Interface Service (PRI)

Description
-----------

ISDN Primary Rate Service (PRI) is a service provided by Pacific 
Bell over T1 (1.544 mbps) point-to-point private line facilities.

PRI enhances the capabilities of the basic T1 digital trunk facility 
by allowing the user to control the individual channels of the T1 
pipe. 

Channels of the T1 pipe can be used as 24 individual digital trunks 
each having 64 kbps bandwidth.  Customers can mix data, voice, 
video and packet switching services in any combination depending on 
the network load. 

Pacific Bell's Central Office switch can dynamically change the 
configuration of the pipe depending on the traffic.  

Applications
------------

Improved PBX connectivity:

PRI provides PBX customers improved trunking capability by 
consolidating services in a single T1 pipe or in trunk groups within 
a group of T1s or DS3s.  This allows a more efficient management of 
resources.  

The call-by-call service selection feature for exchange services 
like DID, DOD, and WATS allows customers to dynamically configure 
their networks as traffic patterns change during the day.  

Example:  

During the day, most of the trunks can be allocated to exchange 
services.  Later, after business hours, trunks can be allocated for 
data traffic to host computers.  

PBX customers can also consolidate their IEC (Interexchange Carrier) 
traffic through a PRI connection to the Central Office and eliminate 
separate direct connections to IECs.  This will also allow users to 
take advantage of discount plans for IEC services.  

One PRI signaling channel can control up to 479 64 kbps trunks.  
This feature can provide a seamless replacement for DS3 facilities, 
allowing users to take advantage of all of the features and 
functionalities of PRI.

Enhanced Equal Access to IEC Services:

With PRI, Pacific Bell can expand the choice of IEC services to 
customers who would otherwise have to lease dedicated facilities from 
IECs.  

Customers can also use the PRI features to aggregate IEC access to 
resellers and small business customers.

PRI as a Host Hub:

PRI is great for consolidating traffic from many users to a single 
host.  Examples include telecommuting and LAN integration 
applications.

PRI Network Calling Features:
-----------------------------

PRI provides network features like Calling Line ID, Network Ring 
Again, Call Forward Reason Display, and ANI.  These features are 
economical for applications which require delivery of Calling Line 
ID, e.g. information services, voice mail, 900/976 services, 
pay-per-view, etc.
