Welcome to the Pilot(TM) Dinky Pad Data Viewer.
This program was designed to display pictures that created using the Dinky Pad v0.92b (or higher) drawing program.
This program will display the bitmaps contained in the PC backup file and allow you to copy the displayed file to the clipboard, print the file to your printer, or save the file as a bitmap (bmp). Modified and new pictures can be sent back to the Pilot.
Before you use the DinkyView program, you must install the Generic Conduit Manager. Simply execute the program called CondMgr.exe and select the first menu item (Install/Install Conduit Manager). Then select the second menu item (Install/Install DinkyView).
You can run DInkyView from any directory, as long as the file DinkVwA.dll is in the same directory. (new in version 2.2)
This program is very simple to use. When you start the program, it automatically loads any datafile which has been downloaded from your Pilot.
The first bitmap on the list will be displayed. To change to a different bitmap, select its name from the combo box.
Or select View/Overview from the menu, and click on the picture you want.
To print a single picture, select it and click on the print button. There is a similar selection on the File menu.
Also in the File menu, there is a command to "print with title". This prints the time, date, filename and the text that goes with the picture.
The "print collection" command prints all the pictures as above, 4 per page.
The current bitmap can be saved as a bitmap(bmp) file by selecting the Save Current Bitmap as option, or press the Save button.
To copy the displayed bitmap, press the copy button or select Copy from the Edit menu. Switch to any other Windows application that supports graphic paste, and select Edit/Paste. The pasted bitmap is black & white, 160 pixels wide.
From any graphic application, select the image that you want. Bear in mind that DinkyView has no placement capability, so select the graphics with the upper left corner as you want it to be on the Pilot.
Switch to DinkyView and select the picture you want to over-write, or click on the New button. Select the menu Edit/Paste. A black & white version of the graphic will replace your current picture.
You can make small changes to your pictures by selecting the pen color (either black or white) and the pen size (1, 2 or 4 pixels) and dragging directly on the image. This mode is not recommended, but sometimes useful. A better way to edit your drawings is in a proper drawing package like CorelDraw, CorelPhotoPaint, PaintBrush or PaintShop, followed by a copy/paste operation.
If you performed any HotSync without the Generic Conduit Manager in place, you may have files called dinkydat.pdb in your backup directory. If you do, you can load these files into your DinkyView program by pressing the Browse button and wait a few seconds. Dinky Pad data files end with the extension (.pdb) and are usually stored in the c:\pilot\...\backup directory.
If you make any changes to these files, you can save them to disk. The changes will create a backup file and over-write the previous file, but will not be sent on a HotSync! If you want to send them on a HotSync, you will have to copy from these files and paste to the default HotSync file (.\dinkyvw\dinkyvw.dat)
If you have elected not to use the Generic Conduit System, you can still use DinkyView to display the contents of the DinkyPad program. You will have to select the dinkydat.pdb file each time you start DinkyVw.exe, and you will not be able to send your changes back to the Pilot
If you find that the backup files on your hard drive are not recent, it may be that your Pilot is not updating them during a HotSync. The cure for this is to delete all installed applications on your Pilot except DinkyPad, and then re-install the apps. This moves DinkyPad up to the front of the line, and your backup files should be updated on each HotSync. Palm/USR will fix this problem in the next version of HotSync. Similarly, the Generic Conduit System fixes this problem.
