GolfTrac Assistant
Table of Contents

GolfTrac Assistant is an add-on application to GolfTrac to provide added functionality and assist with database restoration in the event of a bad backup.

GolfTrac Assistant provides:

  • Database Magic - Breaks the association between GolfTrac and it's databases so that GolfTrac can be easily upgraded.
  • Export - Export your rounds as "tab" or "comma" delimited text to a memo pad. Copy that text to Excel or your favorite spread sheet for backup, to print a hard copy for the 4-some, or perform further analysis.
  • Hookup - reattach broken round/course relationships. With the release of Palm Desktop 2.0 3rd party backups were broken. If you happen to lose your course database this let's you recreate the course and reattach rounds to it.

The Add-On utilities: CourseBuilder and GolfTrac Assistant (formerly FpsDBA) are purely optional. They are not needed to use and enjoy GolfTrac. They merely provide additional functionality or a work around for a specific problem, usually a problem we have no control over and are forced to work around. We want you to have the best Golf Scoring PDA application on the market and strive to obtain that goal. It is through utilities and add-ons like these that help us obtain that goal.

[ DATABASE MAGIC]

DATABASE MAGIC

Ahh, the Palm OS. That great little operating system that makes our Pilots hum. The Palm OS associates databases to an application via field in the database information called the "creator". If the "creator" of a database and the application are the same, the database will not show up in the memory list separately. It's size is included with the size and record numbers of the application. If GolfTracs' databases were not associated it's size would appear to grow with each round you add. (Currently GolfTracs size is 62k).

If you delete an application from your pilot, the Palm OS will kindly delete any databases associated with it (normally a good thing). The Palm OS does not always install large applications properly. Especially when trying to install one large application over another (say a GolfTrac upgrade).

To upgrade GolfTrac we ask you to delete your current version first. This would in effect wipe out your data.

Database Magic simply breaks the relationship so that you can delete GolfTrac without deleting your GolfTrac data. In essence "Hide" the databases.

Install your upgrade, and "Un-Hide" the databases and your off and running again.

[ EXPORT ]

Sample Export

EXPORT

Export gives you a way to extract the data from the pilot. It's a crude way, but will serve well as an interim fix until our conduit and desktop package is released.

Simply choose around and tap the "Export Round" button.

A new unfiled record in the MemoPad database on the Pilot will be created with your round data in either a "Tab" or "Comma" delimited format.

HotSync, and it'll be a memo record on your Mac or PC.

Copy this memo to NotePad, or paste it into Excel or your favorite spreadsheet or database for further analysis. Print out score cards for your league buddies, etc.

Tapping "Quick View" pops up a window displaying the round name, the course and the players involved so you can pick the right course to export.

Choose the delimiter for the export from the Export preferences screen. You can access it from the menu.

A Sample Export is show (a screen shot from Zilot, the Macintosh Pilot Emulator).

[ Hook-Up ]

Hook-Up

OK, Here's the skinny on Hook-Up...

You'll probably _never_ use it. But if you need to you'll be glad it's there.

Round Data (the scores) are kept in one database.
Course Data (Hole par, length, etc.) is kept in a different database.

When a course is created, a unique time based number is used to identify the course. This number is stored in the round database to relate the two together.

If the course database get's lost (because maybe it wasn't backed up) then your rounds become invalid because they can no longer find a course with the appropriate "unique" number.
Hook-Up let's you tell GolfTrac, which course the round belongs to.

Simply choose a round, tap the "Attach Round" button.

Choose a course from the list. Tap the "To this Course" button.

You will be asked to confirm the change.

NOTE: Attaching the round to the wrong course or an improperly entered course will throw off the statistics. This part of GolfTrac Assistant is to be used for reconstructive purposes only. (Unless that is you can think of another use.)
